He found the easiest way was to mark the wall where the hearth would be and then begin to alter the stonework, carefully melting and excavating the stone and pulling it outwards to stick into the room, creating a larger space for the wood to burn in. Walls, mantle, and raised hearthstone were made this way from melted and re-shaped stone. Once he'd thinned the back wall enough he 'tunneled' upwards using the same process, giving the smoke a narrowing flue to rise up and making the walls of it smooth so ash and soot wouldn't get stuck there. He angled it towards the outside, near the top of the building, as high as his magic could reach, but held off on melting and shaping the final sliver of stone to the outside until they were all complete.
