Biting his lip, Loren didn't respond to Weaver right away. Finally, he nodded. "I don't know exactly what you'd like to know." Sighing, he rubbed his palms against his thigh, clearly upset, angry, and nervous, all combining in an ugly ball in his stomach. "Zariah was the head of our family in Northaven. That meant she was supposed to be obeyed without question, otherwise we'd be punished."
His hands clenched into fists again before he relaxed them. "Edrei was our distant cousin, who was a relatively new arrival to Northaven. She was eaten by a landshark shortly before I regained my sanity. Zariah is a distant cousin too. My family had my father, who was murdered, my mother, who died giving birth to my sister Astra, my stepmother, who died giving birth to my half-sister Beatrix, my eldest brother, Wyatt, who was also murdered, and Neron." The words came out flatly, though it was clear he was struggling to keep himself together.
"Neron and Zariah struck up a romance right before we came to Caido. However...when Zariah was transported, she came from our future. My future, and Neron's. She was aged, and she had a five year old with her, Jace, who she claimed was her and Neron's child. That they'd been married." He shook his head, still not quite believing it. Then a fresh bout of tears came over him from having to bring up Jace, and all of Loren's other dead relatives.
It was not as much a relief as he'd hoped to talk about the council, given how wrapped up his family was in this mess. "Good." As she went on to talk about his own position, he nodded, exhaustion writ large on his features. "I'll do my best." He spoke in an uncertain voice.
When she talked about her own feelings, he uncurled from the ball he'd formed. Turning, he reached for her hands, simply holding them both in his. "I would choose us any day too. I just...can't get it out of my head." He trembled, as the shock and the adrenaline of the day started to catch up with him.
Flinching at her insistence that it was his home, he pressed his lips together. "I want to believe that. But...it's going to take even longer for people to accept me now. Maybe they never will." He didn't even sound upset about that, just resigned.
