Letting out another one of those slightly hysterical half-laughs half-sobs, Loren shrugged. "Doesn't matter, does it? He's gone, and the Eirachi thought it was true enough." It was an unintentional echo of Weaver's own thoughts on the matter, spoken in a broken and bitter voice.
Still holding her hands, he sighed. "I could've prevented this. At least in part." He bit his lip. "When Neron sent me to find mageglass, to prove I was worthy of his cabinet, I found it. Along with the cultists. I decided not to risk engaging them, but I should've...I don't know. Went back with a larger force." It hadn't seemed worth the price, but inaction had cost him far more.
"I am. But I can't help but worry, no matter what I do, that there will always be that shadow over me. Especially after...everything that happened today." He gave her a sad smile. "I've lived with it my whole life, though. It's a burden I know how to bear."
