Nate might understand the ramifications the past could have better than anyone, the circles that were walked again and again and again, but it didn't stop the hurt, no matter how he wanted to. And it shows in his face, in his unblinking gaze. He forgives her, he understands, but he is hurt.
Sunjata's words help Nate to find the resolve in him to steady again, to swallow and nod. They do need her. Not that they're incomplete without, but that it feels more complete with her there. They want her here. His blue eyed gaze finally falls away from Hotaru's face to meet Sunjata's, Nate leaning to brush his lips against the attuned's cheek, not wanting to interrupt his flow. And when the words I love you fall from his lips, Nate blinks, surprise, and a kind of hazy pride filling him. The edge of a smile curls his lips, breaking through the hurt, as he turns back to face Hotaru. "We love you." He echoes, nothing more to add.
It's easier to speak without her eyes on them, a fact that he tries to take advantage of to say as much as he can. "It wouldn't be fair if we asked you for anything different than what we ask each other." Nate ventured, trying to put words to feelings on the fly. There's something so different about being in this moment, about coming to it in this way, that makes it harder than a mere hypothetical. "Do what you want, with who you want, just... come home, to us, at the end of it." He squeezes her hand, meets her eyes, and nods, though he frowns at the request, at the implications it points to in her past. Perhaps it's a little easier to understand her actions than he'd thought. "I don't think that's something you have to worry about. But... if it ever happens, no one will just disappear."
There's a serious heavy atmosphere between them now, and he can't stand it. He's tired of sadness, tired of heaviness, especially in the face of what (he thinks) is happening. The edge of the grin is forced wider, into something wide. "And if you need more than words..." Nate pauses, to turn to Sunjata, to give the other man a split second warning that he was about to do something reckless, something that had the potential to blow them apart completely, but that could also be the foundation for everything they did from this point on. He felt lucky. "Then marry us."
