Vai will look back on this in a little while, she hopes, and be able to laugh at Zeph’s terrible jokes (Catsbane, though, that might stick), able to appreciate the brush of his hand against her back, the diligent attention given to a patient he’s only really been obligated to bring to the clinic. But right now all of her attention is on the magic at her disposal, the things they can’t see going on beneath the surface of Sunjata’s skin.
”Steady,” she murmurs in a low, soft voice, though it’s not clear if she’s speaking to the Flood or to herself (both, more than likely). Her thumb grazes over the back of his hand, the soft glow pulsing from her fingers indicating an invisible fight going on in his body; in the end, she manages to coax his heart to march to the drumbeat of her own (and honestly, hers isn’t exactly calm, but it’s better than Sunjata’s).
The rest of her magic follows the pathways of lightning through his veins, pulling at the damage, picking up where Zuriel left off to knit together the bits of him that have been left frazzled by lightning. When she finally opens her eyes, Vai is tired, but she seems satisfied with the work. ”Don’t you ever do something like that again,” she says in a softly scolding voice to Sunjata, pressing a motherly kiss to the hand she still holds.
