She seems satisfied enough with the inspection, nodding his head along with her to agree that he’d keep an eye on whether it impacted anything — sure that Nate would be able to help him come up with a plan so he might be able to keep track of what’s changed and what stays the same. “I’ll let you know.” He agrees, offering her a soft smile.

But that soft smile falters when she speaks again, his attention focusing on the lines on his hand within hers, on the way she squeezes it and says all the things that he knows are true but isn’t ready to accept just yet. Perhaps the lightning had spurred a bit too much of that mortality within him. He swallows hard, bobbing his head along in a nod toward her as he picks over his words.

“What if there isn’t an afterwards, though?” He asks, lifting his gaze up to scan her face. “What if something preventable happens and they don’t come home?” What then? That is his biggest fear, one he’s struck into Nate numerous times unfortunately, but one all the same.
