It's taken a lifetime to lose my way
All the wasted time on my hands turns to sand
Raised to be knights; taken off of boards, and the cosmic imbalance shifted the beasts’ parameters – the fire didn’t seem so stark or dark thereafter, whittling along in flames of chess pieces, and a mocking chord when a man on a horse was beaten back by the abrupt conflagration. As if he were being swallowed, consumed, and devoured by the weight of the world – no names given or dragged, a gruff tone of amusement flickering through him.
Then attention dissipated and wandered, and so too did the embers, curling and coiling back in upon themselves as more philosophical inquiries fed into the light. Distracted and deterred, he could recall all sorts of living, breathing gods that had melded and molded into his lifetimes: some of Isilme, with their wars and hatred, some of Helovia, with their indifferences and cracked shrines, and here, with those they cherished and those who bled at their altars and those who craved for absolution. “Do they have concerns about us?” Did they care? Did it matter? “Maybe for their favorites.” Maybe for those who mattered to them.
He’d done his share of falling to his knees, of begging and pleading for lives to be saved, of striving to become something for others.
Maybe it was time he became something for himself.
