The forest was a maelstrom, and the little fox didn’t mind. She understood the nature of things, how they bent and swayed, how sometimes it was merely matter, inherent, instinctive, for branches, brambles, nettles, and thorns to hark and chase at their intruders. She wished she didn’t appear that way though – wanted to be a part of that ancient threshold too, and perhaps could’ve, would’ve, should’ve stayed, had it not been for the thing calling, calling, calling to her.

Besides, there was the roll of surf before her, somewhere in the midst, and she was so curious. So inquisitive.

So she ducked beneath the boughs snagging at her fur, and hastened after the call.
