Nate knows he’s in no danger the exact same way he knows he’s not in any danger. No one being this obvious could actually be a threat. Sure, he’d gambled and lost in the past when it came to under estimating the danger of a situation, of a stranger, but there’s a difference between not noticing sinister intent and being followed by someone who seems to think they’re in some kind of game.
Whoever this person is, whatever they want, they’re about to get a rude surprise. Nate slips into the front of the spire, stepping just deep enough into the shadows that he can’t be seen from outside, and turns on his heel, mismatched eyes glinting in the low light. When his tail appears in the doorway, Nate leans forwards, meaning to cut as imposing a figure as he can manage, his shoulders and his fists ups ”You know you’re really fucking bad at that, right?” he asks the stranger, his gaze roaming up and down the man, taking in the book, the wide eyed innocence on his face.
