Something on Nate’s face cracks, flinches back and away from Safrin, her words. He might not feel the ice of the world around him, her temper made physical, but he feels it inside himself, unblinking eyes wide and staring, his lips pulled upwards in something that is not a smile. Years of having this lesson beaten into him scream at him to hold his tongue, and he ignores it, like he always has, his voice soft in his own ears. ”You want me to hurt him like that? You want to see him hurt like that?” It pains him to think about, as much as anything can touch him in his icy protection, but he had expected her rage and anger directed solely at him, had not expected such a casual condemnation of one of her followers.
