She wasn’t certain which was worse: the barracks being on fire, or the Sparkbird unfurling all its anger and rage down upon them. The shocks disarrayed the system, and were she able to feel pain, there would’ve been a wince, a whine.
Instead, she gripped Azrael’s hand tighter.
And remembered she really wasn’t capable of much else.
No ability to heal. Just Henry’s bird shift fluttering in her senses – and now wasn’t the time to take flight. Not yet anyway.
So she kept walking, kept moving, kept following Samuel, terrified and uncertain, hoping they hadn’t made a mistake (but they already had – in so many different ways).
