The armor remains around his shoulders, head ducking slightly as he closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, choosing to refrain from agreeing with her if only because he has so much already and would so much in the future.
But what was it for? Why?
“If the Voice is destroyed in this war, Safrin would save Nate.” He manages to say as he turns around to face her, face hollow and grave. If he cared for the child, raised her, loved her, then if the Voice was no more, Safrin would save his husband. He works his jaw slowly, grinding his teeth, looking away from her if only to look anywhere else. “I just didn’t want to lose him.” The possibility and likelihood of death, the slow, painful death it was sure to bring if the Voice did perish. “So I made the deal.”
