He takes the bag from her and ties it off, listening while she speaks, and he has nothing else to truly do with his hands for the moment, so they idly settle on the bag as he casts a glance up at her, then back to the bag, then to the watery light that filters through cloudy skies. “It isn’t that, Maeve.” He finally manages, huffing out a sigh that puffs up his cheeks, his frustration evident in how he doesn’t know what to do with himself, with his hands, with anything.
“I don’t tell people things about myself because it always gets spun around and used against me.” Before she can interject, he continues on. “But I don’t want to be a burden either. I don’t want to have this… Pity that people look at me with. Like how you’re looking at me.” His gaze finally lifts to her face, while he tries to be as honest as he can be. He moves to stand again, to grab the sandbag and begin to pile it up against the wall of the clinic.
