i wish you could see the wicked truth
caught up in a rush, it's killing you
If there is one small mercy about this whole experience, it’s that when the work does go, it goes smoothly. Honestly, Nate can’t help but feel like disaster is just around the corner with the way they had started, but nothing seems to go amiss. He brings the tools in, and they each set out to their chosen tasks.

Sam’s task isolates him from the group, a fact that seems to work in his favour without anything there to rob his focus from the task of chipping away at the entrance. The stone is stubborn and unyielding, but already damaged from the obsidian being forced through it, and the bookmaker will be able to open the tunnel into a more comfortable squeeze.

Jack gets the space cleaned without trouble. Whether it’s intentional or just coincidence, he to time his cleaning with the mess Varus makes shaping the divots in the ground. Perhaps it’s luck, or perhaps it’s the firm grip of a metal hand, but Varus makes the task of chipping away at stone look downright breezy. With everything else taken, Nate gets to work reshaping the broken obsidian, flattening the bottoms so they can stand upright more easily, and softening the broken edges into a nicer looking silhouette.

As Sam resurfaces, Nate calls out to him, voice echoing in the cave. “Can you build a uh... a wall, a flood wall around the entrance too? We don’t want the monsoons fucking it up.” Amazingly, the doctor manages to huff a laugh along with the words, though there’s no humour in his face.

It works out that the rest of them finish their tasks in about the same amount of time, Jack left waiting the longest. Nate drags one of the finished slabs towards the captain, arranging it carefully and distracting Jack to hold it still, before he does the same to Varus. The third slab is held up by his own glowing arms, the doctor pushing for just a moment dig a pool of silvery wire from his toolbox. “Just hold these still, and help me get the wire all wrapped around nice, okay?” He says to Varus and Jack, gaze turning to each of them in turn before Nate’s hands start moving.

Nate assigns the following tasks

Sam: build a flood wall around the entrance to the cave
Jack and Varus: Help Nate weave wire around the stones so they hold each other up something something physics trust me
