It's a special sort of torture not to be able to bury his head against his husband's shoulder, or to feel the pull of Ronin's fingers in his curls. Enduring this exquisite sweetness is almost too much to bear, and it makes him want to laugh as much as snarl. So instead of either, he simply pants, "—I love you—" Because it's the only thing that makes sense to say.
