The snide remark is something Sunjata tries to brush off, like water off a duck’s back, in the realization that Nate hasn’t left his grasp yet. He remains close, the whimper leaving him, the foot stomping, nails digging into Sunjata’s skin hard enough to leave little red crescents. And he doesn’t care, simply trying to smooth over the jagged cracks where he can, soon as Nate’s irritation comes through, Sunjata simply clinging to Nate tighter throughout it all. “I haven’t… Asked if it’s useless, yet. I try not to bring it up.” For the same reasons Nate didn’t want to bring him up.
The difference was that Nate was there, in the face of Safrin, had shown up and spoken to the goddess on his own – and Sunjata? Sunjata’s never seen the Voice without Nate. The difference lied there.
A quiet laugh leaves him, one that’s not really humorous but at least a slight bit amused in the face of Nate’s irritation, of the words that leave him, of the curse he doesn’t understand in a language he doesn’t know. “You know damn well better than anyone else that I’m not what one would consider a smart man, Nate.” He murmurs, ever so quick to self-deprecating himself when given the chance.

He clings to his husband as the shudder racks through him, keeping him together, feeling the teeth at his neck and simply tugging his wings tighter, pulling Nate into his embrace even further, arms scrabbling around the Ascended wherever he can, reaching and tugging and pulling to keep them as one. “Safrin’s making me choose. Every time I see her.” He says quietly, frowning as he tilts his head to press more dark kisses against the side of Nate’s head. “The Voice might make you have to choose too.” Before it happens, goes unsaid.
“But… If we step down, we don’t have to face it at every corner. We can live and wait for it, be far enough away that when it happens we’re not in the thick of it initially.” It’s a pipe dream, he knows, but the only thing Sunjata can cling to anymore is hope.
Hope that they make it out of this alive.
Hope that it doesn’t tear them apart.
Hope that if the war goes south for them both, they’ll always be together after they fall.
