“No… No you’re not.” Sunjata replies quietly, having nothing else to add to it. There are things that ghost into his mind, that echo quietly in his throat before they die before he has a chance to even think them to life, though, and by that time she’s reaching for his hand as he withdraws. Both their hands are calloused and rough, scarred and tanned by the sun. He works his jaw, focusing on her as he airs his question, as she shakes her head and drops his hand and he immediately uses it to push back the longer dark hair, stained with ash from the Climb’s air.
She tells him it’s something different and he doesn’t know what it means, doesn’t know where to begin to tear it apart until she continues on and it’s a sort of devotion he doesn’t deserve, a devotion he’s never earned in his life. And perhaps that’s seen in the way his lips purse slightly, in the way the scar that spans his cheek is tugged. “I’m still here, though.” He says quietly, watching her as her gaze drifts to the ground and his own lifts above her, to scan the area around them as the heat continues to seep in, continuing to linger along his sweat slicked skin.
“What makes me the different one, Aurelia? Is it the fact that I was the first to understand you? Is it because I was Governor and had some semblance of power?” To say he is powerful is something he’ll never admit out loud, not in a serious manner even if it’s true. “I don’t need you to follow me. I need you to be my friend. To be Nate’s friend. For however long is left for us.” Another step draws him closer and his hand reaches up again to press his fingers to the underside of her jaw, to tilt her head up so that he can scan her gaze. “I don’t know how to fill that piece that you’re missing, Aurelia, but I don’t have any pieces of myself to give away anymore.” He’d fractured and given out far too much, he’d split himself apart again and again and been left with nothing but slivers left to glue together and pretend it made a backbone that was heavier than a feather.
