"Can't change what's already happened, Mae." He's not really sure who he's talking to, her or himself. Maybe both. Doesn't really matter, does it? It's true, maybe more true than anything he's ever said before. He finishes the bottle and contemplates throwing it at one of the rocks but doesn't. Instead he buries in the sand with the rest and works on opening his fifth. Another drink but it doesn't burn as nicely as the ones before. Again, he has to fight down the urge to just throw the bottle away. One can only destroy so many things before it stops feeling cathartic.
It's only been a day and he doesn't really see the fault in that. She wants more of him than he's willing to give, than he can give. "Plus, I'm sure you were busy with Jack anyway. Gotta give the Captain his dues." Does he mean something by it? Not really. But word spreads fast in a place like this. Especially when one is the queen and she's pregnant with no man in sight.
