"I am not sure they would let something poisonous be in an open enclosure like this," Mateo points out with a small smile, and he chooses to believe in the positive aspect of what Ever says about the rest of their day. They can finish here at the butterfly enclosure, and then go and see Africa and Asia and maybe pay a visit to the reptile house while they're there, and he hopes he might be able to persuade Ever to go on a carriage around the park when it's time to go home.
For now though, there is chrysalis rescuing to be done. Mateo allows the monarch to tip toe across his finger and onto Ever's hand, before he reaches out to readjust the leaves and the struggling insect with an ease and confidence that goes beyond rule breaking. As a botanist, he is at home in this sort of environment, and with a little teasing, the new butterfly is able to crawl out and rest as its wings dry out and unfold. "There. Happy birthday," he tells it with a soft smile.
