There is a single terrible moment where it seems like Sam’s joke might tip Nate into violence, some impossible vein all but throbbing in his forehead, and then, just like that, he’s laughing, face almost split in two by the force of his grin. “Guess I did.”
A hum of triumph leaves him as Mia clambers onto his shoulders, Nate turning back to Sam with a smugness that slips away when he hears the bite in the others voice. “They’re real. They’re cryptic, nonsensical bullshit, but they’re real.” Nate sighs, and reaches up to stroke Mia’s fur. “Everything that I’ve seen has happened, in one way or another. I don’t need anything more than that to believe it.”
