But somewhere, deep down, he can remember the look the Voice had given him when they’d tried to cure Nate with the Frey water, bringing it to the Voice who couldn’t do anything with it but ask for Loren’s help – one that he had been unwilling to help with initially despite Sunjata’s attempts to nearly beg the past healer.
But that was in the past, and Sunjata shakes his head meeting her fiery, gilded eyes with cool steel of his own. “For survival perhaps.” That’s all Sunjata can think of. The fact that Nate may survive if he isn’t fighting – the fact that Nate had only wanted to grow stronger to protect himself and his family in the upcoming war, that he didn’t want to fight for the sake of fighting.
Suddenly, Melita leans forward and there’s venom on her tongue, her body poised like some kind of feral animal and all Sunjata can do is stare, to pinch his brows together a fraction, meeting her eyes with uncertain and confused ones of his own. “I had a deal with Safrin but she was never clear if it still would have counted after Nate wasn’t just Ascended anymore, but a demigod.” He answers it as bluntly as he can before his nostrils flare with the sharp inhale he takes. “I keep… Doing this, Melita, because I can’t lose him.” And in the grand scheme he thinks he’s doing his best. That’s all he’s ever tried to do.
