The sled was something he could handle, something that put confidence and surety back into his spine as he settled down among the dogs and harness line and happily held forth on the tricks and techniques of his trade. Deimos's treats were met with eager snuffling and many licks to hands or gloves, and excited yips from those further down the line.
"Takes getting used to. I've got different runners I swap out for different temperatures, different conditions... and when we're out on the circuit it's the bigger pack sleds and the full team on the gangline, with a couple trainees runnin' alongside in case someone gets hurt and needs to ride for awhile." Tal reached over to rub the shoulders of the nearest swing dogs behind Bell, grinning affectionately at them. "How fast they go depends on how far you want 'em to run, and what weight they're pullin'. In good weather, we can make maybe ninety miles in a day, pulling a full load. They've outrun ursurs before, on a head start at a dead sprint, though." Barely, but they'd done it.
Except for the one time they hadn't, of course. Tal's grin faded a little and he gave a shrug. "The luxere racers might be able to go faster over a short course, but I'll take my dogs any day for endurance."
