A flash of genuine frustration washes across Nate’s face, freezing in place when he catches it and tries to throttle it into something more complacent. He’s not upset at Sunjata. That’s not fair. They’re having a good time, and they are making memories, and he is happy.
“How about,” The words start slow, Nate throwing a plan together as he speaks it, the improvisation made more obvious by the weight of his accent, “We go home, we make some hot cocoa and snuggle up, and I tell the whole story to you and the babas, huh?” Nate leans in close to Sunjata as he speaks, wrapped up enough that he doesn’t leech what little warmth there is in his husbands body.
Though, it’s not really a suggestion so much as it is a plan of action, an announcement of departure. The ascended glances back at the decorated tree, feeling genuinely light as he gazes upon it. “Don’t suppose we could convince you to come hang out by the bar, huh?” Nate laughs, elbowing his husband and the tree to include them both in the jest, passing yet another shock between them all. Each branch seems to quiver in turn, making the baubles chime against one another, but the tree stays rooted in place, seemingly spurning the offer.
Though, when they wake the next morning, there will be a tell tale chiming just outside the windows of the VlmaVloed, light dancing around the snowy street.
