He didn't know the truth of the words he spoke. Nothing she did had ever helped anyone, and that was not bound to change anytime soon. Despite any good intentions she had. Despite the fact that being helpful was the only true desire she'd held all these years. Maea was sure it wasn't an intentional jab, or Nate would surely have gloated more over finally saying something that cut her.
In his defense it hardly showed; just a slight tightening around her eyes. Easy to miss.
The disparaging expression on his face tore into her too. Worse than any word or curse, it tore into her and reduced the pale-faced girl until she felt diminished, ripped apart and exposed as the pathetic creature of selfishness, spite and violence she truly was. Some oozing monster of gut instinct and base need, without a shred of decency.
How fitting it was, to be used for vandalism then. Tearing things down and bringing ruin was all the was good for, after all; it was almost satisfying. Enough that she inclined her head in mute acknowledgement before Nate dismissed her and stalked off.
Almost. Only a niggling worry remained, that had everything to do with the risk of death and any repercussions it might have on the one person who truly cared about the monster known as Maea Valair. She mulled it over as the slowly turned back towards the daggers, the training field and the target where her last throw remained.
