Juvenile? If that’s the case Evie is right there alongside him, because she groans pitifully at the idea. “And I missed it? Gods, and I know I’m not talented enough to try and make them by hand.” Or she would, damn it, because they sound incredible right about now.

Then again, so does the burger, which disappears far too quickly into her mouth to be ladylike. Good thing her parents are dead, though they might be rolling in their graves right about now. It’s how she knows she’s doing the right thing these days. Blissed out on red meat and toasted buns, Evie lets herself be steered who knows where by Deimos’ hand at her back. She can’t remember the last real meal she had between packing, closing up the shop, and making the journey to the portal. It warms her from the inside, and though it sits heavy in her stomach it’s a good sort of weight.

When her eyes flicker open like she’s coming out of a coma, they nearly close immediately once more upon seeing rows and rows of dessert sellers. Whatever comes out of her throat is definitely not a whimper, but she’ll admit that it’s close. Reaching a hand behind her to snag urgently at Deimos’ wrist where his hand is on her back, the Evergreen hauls them over to the left where a booth stands with chilled cheesecake slices dipped in chocolate on sticks await them. “I’m never leaving this street,” she vows in hushed undertone, like it’s a prayer, as she hurries the two of them into the line.

DEIMOS
ache first, but then let the cuts close
spit out the blood
Despite maintaining his patience often, Deimos still knew better than to strive for attempting a funnel cake either. Too complicated with all the interlocking pieces. He’d prefer to eat them anyway. “Maybe they will have another next Deepfrost.” And maybe Halo would have access – rather than him being sprung out of the mountainsides by Remi because they needed to go hunt down a relic. Even that seemed all-encompassing and uncertain, given the war doomed and damned to set in between. Notions of the future had shrunk to smaller and smaller pieces, and though he wasn’t a man to hope very often, it would be nice to have something in the distance to rely upon.

Between himself and Belial, the burger was soon gone as well, before they were dragged (perhaps not the right word; the Sword went rather willingly) towards the cheesecake booth. His eyes widened a fraction, eagerly and honestly content with the situation, as they settled back into another line, and his eyes drifted between Evie and anyone going by with one of the chocolate-laden concoctions. Eventually his intonations went into a lower rumble as well, snorting at her proclamation. “Going to make your apothecary here then? Bold.”

The notion of funnel cakes and their potential - but only future - existence makes her even more eager for the dessert in front of them, and Deimos willingly being tugged along is a relief. Absolutely no delays could be allowed, nothing would be permitted to stand between her and that cheesecake right now. Even the distraction of Deimos leaning closer and lowering his voice to only be caught by her ears can’t tear her gaze away from the advertisement board. Her snort of amusement is far from ladylike, but he’s never cared about that before. “I’ll be curing stomach aches around the clock, sounds like a great business model to me.” Her own included of course, but that was inconsequential.

Since he bartered for them last time, Evie slides gracefully in front to take the lead this time, insistent on fairness. So when she’s handed the chilled treats, she spins and presents him with one of them, the smile she would normally wear already disappearing in favor of biting the tip of the cheesecake slice immediately. While the burger was delicious, the dessert is far better, and she barely has the coordination to lead them to one of the benches lining the paths so they can sink onto it to savor their food. Evie practically melts into the bench, already eyeing the other stalls - though much slower, now that her sweet tooth is being catered to. “This is going to be the best welcome celebration two people have ever had,” she vows, holding her half-eaten stick towards Deimos’ to nudge together in juvenile parody of a cheers, chocolate clinging to the corner of her smiling mouth. Already she feels so much lighter, and that’s all she can ask for today.

His head shook in amusement, barely arching his brow, too distracted now by the dessert anyway. Content and sitting, munching on the cheesecake, he watched people meandering by, all of them slowed by the promise of some sugary confection near. Half a statement about coming to Halo to do more than cure stomach aches sat behind his tongue, and he caught it halfway before it escaped into the wind – because if that’s all she wanted to do, then that was her choice.

The cheers wasn’t a grand one, considering his was almost decimated already, but he snorted and snickered just the same. “Welcome home then,” he uttered around the notions, aiming for better things, rather than all the haunted parallels left behind.
