Hotaru
It doesn’t take too long, but Hotaru can almost feel Melita’s impatience, and it makes her lips twitch in concealed amusement. She’d been much the same at the Honeybee’s age. Preferring to startle and chase prey to a harrowing end instead of stalking and planning entrapments. Only age and wisdom would temper that fire; and if Melita was at all like Ru, it would only be tempered a small degree.
Content to stand back and watch, arms folded but not closed off, the Valkyrie’s ears perk at the sound of scuffling and the squeak of panicked rodents. As they tumble into view, Melita’s bow rises, and the crackle of ice on the tip of her arrow makes Ru’s fingers twitch with the desire to claim her own icy projectiles.
But no, this hunt is for the other woman, even if it ends devastatingly fast. The swamp rat has no chance against the seasoned bow-user, the arrow piercing it just behind the elbow to end its life swiftly and mercifully. It hits the ground immediately, momentum cut short. Ru whistles appreciatively. “Do you just need the one?” Mentally commanding the birds to circle in a loose cyclone of feathers and talons overhead, waiting to know if they were still needed before disbanding them.
