It feels as though there is a rope rapidly slipping through his fingers, and if the length runs out, he's doomed; only Everest doesn't have the emotional intelligence to understand quite what this emotion is.

What he was doing was trying to provide his friend with rational reasons to come with him to the haven, so that Mateo might have something more to be persuaded by than just because I really don't want to go alone.
