Wincing - because as right as Remi's words were, Ronin hates that they are true. He has never seen himself as a terrible parent, and yet in the throes of war with their adolescent son believing he has to stay among the fighting... it's difficult to avoid that painful fact. Grumbling a note of something as close to pain as it can be without receiving a physical injury, Ronin glowers into his soup and gives it a listless stir with his spoon.
"Gods, Remi," he whispers, suddenly not hungry at all as he gazes up at the other man. "If we do come back from this, we have to do better. We have to." It's fair to say that this is not the type of men they ever expected to be, but to still fail so consistently at something so fundamentally easy... it's shameful. "I am not ready to die yet. Not if these are the kinds of memories our children will have of us."
