the echoes of the thunderclaps
reverberation of the dead
He’s so far from the action it’s killing him, but finally the gate is ready, and so Harper slams his hand on the activation mechanism one more time to renew the barrier in the same area; protecting Jack and Melita.

The Kingmaker seems to be slowing down, so Harper makes a last ditch choice and leaps from the top of the mechanism, shifting into his Gore Crow form. It will take some time to get down to the other two (probably this round) but the barrier will be renewed, and he needs to add his muscle to the fight.

- - -

Harper activates the Stargate barrier a second time around Jack and Melita as it has been five post for cooldown. He then leaps off and transforms into the Gore Crow to begin to fly down towards Melita and Jack.

** Fortis Patera Constellation | If activated by a member of the TL council, the star gate can target 1 60ft sphere anywhere within TL. Protects those within for 2 posts. Requires a 5 post cooldown between uses. Must be deactivated by two members of the council.

His manipulation of the air, it appears, is a terrible idea, because every time he's attempted to use it against the Kingmaker, the only thing it has done is... well, fucking nothing. Hissing his frustration under his breath as Melita the hawkeye somehow misses as well, Jack peers up just in time to see the beast heal itself. "You've gotta be fuckin' kiddin' me," Jack growls.

Melita is already channelling and the captain has no intention of losing an opportunity; reaching back for his Water Manipulation this time, he tries to cool the liquid to ice, flinging shards of it towards the Kingmaker. He doesn't particularly care which part, as long as it hits.

Realising his air magic seems to be bad luck this quest, Jack switches back to Water Manipulation, using ice to try and damage the Kingmaker.

Water manipulation: Can create and control water. Must be within a 30ft radius.

JACK
Jack being an Abandoned is common knowledge these days, however his Telepathy remains a well-kept secret:

Oh fuck, oh fuck is the nature of the game today, it seems, and Ludo is no different. Rare though it might be to see one of the heralds panicked, that's exactly the vibe that Melita will get from Ludo as it flaps around her shoulders. "Well that's big," it says, its porcelain mask smooched against Mel's cheek.

"Er... shoo, shoo!" With a flick of its rags, some invisible force blasts out towards the Kingmaker (like life drain on steroids), but just as soon as it hits, Ludo disappears again with a quick, "Gotta go!"

And that's that.

kingmaker
Melita yells, Harper shifts,  Jackhrows icecubes, and Ludo flaps about. More or less, anyways.

Harper's attack misses, as does Jack 's. Slow clap for Ludo and Melita, I guess?

Wanting this strange pelting of ice and water to stop, the Kingmaker's elephant head targets Jack, whipping its trunk towards the captain and sending him flying across the sand. Pushing forward, the Kingmaker arrives properly in Haulani where the damage it can cause significantly increases.

Your randomly assigned order is Melita, Harper, Jack.

Remember to include a summary at the bottom of your post with all action taken. If weapons/upgrades/abilities/items/shifts/etc are used, please include their desc. from your profile at the bottom of your post as well.

REMEMBER: KQs are rewarding but dangerous. They may cause death and/or permanent changes to your characters.

Melita

of the women they burned alive
She would have readily agreed with Ludo (“thank you” there and muffled all the same), but all the youth could do was stare and gasp, watching as the force blasted out – and hoping, beyond hoping that all their powers would come together, and the town would be saved –

Which wasn’t the case.

Her head whipped around to watch Jack get flung across the sand, a shout echoing after him. “You all right?” She didn’t have anything she could do to heal - having never been much of a mender – and then she was off, racing after the Kingmaker.

Because now they had more than just Haulani to worry about.

“Over here, asshat!” was another yell, before the Honeybee snagged another icy arrow, notching, pulling the strand, and sending it volleying off towards the massive beast.

--

Melita runs after the Kingmaker and tries to shoot it again with one of her ice arrows.

He sees Jack go flying from overhead, but he is just trying to race to get to them as swiftly as possible. The finches were not able to do what he had hoped, but now he is here in their place - and though he contemplates blinding the swan's head, there are simply too many eyes for him to believe it would matter at all.

Flying swiftly to try and get above the Kingmaker by a few feet, Harper aims for the tenuous connection of the base of the swan's neck where it diverts into three - and then shifts into his elephant form, plummeting the final few feet with tusks aimed threateningly downward in hopes of goring the Kingmaker not only with his tusks, but perhaps breaking a neck with the weight of 13,000 pounds of thick-skinned weight.

- - -

Harper flies over the Kingmaker in his Gore Crow form, and shifts into his African Elephant form when hopefully ~3m overhead, falling downward towards the connection points of the three heads with tusks aimed downward to either gore it or hurt it with 13,000lbs of falling animal (lol).

Hey. Guess what hurts? No, go on, guess.

You're right. This.

Winded and with a couple of cracked ribs at the very least, Jack finds himself arse up in the sand with the world clamouring and swinging about overhead. (That's how it feels, anyway). It's with a groan and a swipe across his face to get sand out of his mouth and eyes that the captain tries to struggle to his feet.

He can't see Melita in his dazed tunnel vision - and he definitely can't see Harper above the Kingmaker - but he can absolutely see Caido's companion and its three stupid fucking heads.

"This is getting stupid now," he grates, lashing out again with his Water Manipulation to fire a spear of ice towards the creature.

Jack is dazed and confused (obviously) and tries to fling more ice at the Kingmaker! I'd also like to use his Citizenship Ability to shrug off half the damage from the previous attack <3

Water manipulation: Can create and control water. Must be within a 30ft radius.

Citizenship Ability

(In order to use this ability, you must put a clear note in the bottom of your post immediately following the attack you want to 'shrug off').

Melita shoots and strikes. Later when this is all over, we'll agree that a falling elephant would absolutely be the coolest way to have killed a KQ monster, unfortunately, the physics of going from crow to elephant get a bit complicated, which is to say that sadly, Harper misses.

Does Jack have what it takes to finish the Kingmaker off?

To the surprise of no one (probably), Jack misses by a margin of 2. Bad luck there, captain.

Enraged by the sudden appearance of an elephant at its side, the Kingmaker's corresponding head smashes into Harper 's side as its Swan-Head heals once again.

Melita’s thoughts were just a string of curse words as she struck true, hoping, praying, the others could do the same –

And then Harper was an elephant (fucking neat - like how do all these people get such cool moves) –

And Jack missed. And Harper got rammed.

Steeling herself a nice, deep breath so she didn’t start screaming, she figured they could take the opportunity that the town hadn’t been attacked yet, and there was still time.

Voicing nothing, because it would’ve only conveyed potent rage at this point, the youth snagged once more at her ice arrows, notching them along her bow, readied her aim at the Kingmaker, and fired once more.

Maybe this would be it.

--

Melita once again tries to shoot the Kingmaker with her bow/ice arrows.

Haven't taken a hit like that since college, Harper thinks woozily to himself. But hey, he’s falling - oh fuck he’s falling. He shifts into his Gore Crow immediately, readjusting. The swan is clearly the main issue here, so Harper flies as fast as he can towards it, proverbial teeth gritted (do gore crows have teeth?)

Gore crows have insanely sharp beaks and talons, meant to aid their carnivorous tendencies, and Harper uses both liberally on the swan head. Aiming for the eyes, and hoping that if either of the other two heads turns to try to attack him, they hit the swan head too.

- - -

Harper shifts back to Gore Crow, and flies to attack the swan head’s eyes with his beak and talons to try and blind it, hoping the other two heads won’t be able to attack without damaging itself.

Also please knock half his damage from the previous round with this Regional perk.

Torchline has taught you to survive her weather and her terrain. Once per PQ/PQ+/KQ/Drop, you can 'shrug off' half the damage from ONE non-lethal attack.

Don't worry, Mel - Jack doesn't need you to voice your rage to hear it loud and clear. And he knows, alright? He knows this is bullshit and given the choice (the choice being fuck off to the Ark and fly away forever, bye Torchline) he wouldn't be here. He's a captain, not some sneery battlemage.

Regardless, elephants and Gore Crows and arrows, oh my! and Jack should probably get on this as well. Darting across the sand and choosing one of the heads that Harper isn't pecking at to avoid hitting him by accident (because wouldn't that be the cherry on top), he launches some shards of ice towards the Kingmaker.

Jack attacks with ice using his Water Manipulation! He's aiming purposely away from the swan head so he doesn't get in Harper's way, lol.

Melita rolls terribly, but her stats carry her through hits, leaving the King Maker staggering in the sands. Were this pokemon, the HP warning alarm would have been going off like crazy, and frankly, it's a shame that Melita's attack wasn't enough to send the King Maker back to hell (or Caido, or whatever), because she's been the real MVP this KQ. With only 7.5 HP remaining, the question is whether or not Harper or Jack are going to be able to finish things off.

Well, Harper misses.

and

(dun dun dunnn)

Jack hits by a margin of 4. As the King Maker groans and drops to its chimeric knees, no one in the world would blame you Melita for shooting one or both of your KQ-allies.

The King Maker collapses in the sand, jaws agape, heart shuddering to a halt.

The King Maker has dropped:

KingMaker Swan Feather | A white feather that can be crafted into an item capable of healing at mastered level

KingMaker Elephant Hide | Elephant skin that can be crafted into a shield capable of protecting at mastered-level

KingMaker Bear Teeth | Bear teeth that can be crafted into a weapon capable of dealing mastered-level damage.

And then it was done.

Hands still on her bow, the youth watched as the massive beast fumbled, stumbled, and collapsed, incapable of pulling away from her weaponry when the rest of the world seemed at such a malicious state.

Only when it’d been prone and unmoving for a few seconds more did she even begin to move, advancing upon it, staring the creature down, and breathing a sigh of relief.

Safe. They were all safe.

“Shit,” was all she could murmur for half a moment, indulging in her hands sweeping over a swan feather, clutching it against her palm, the softness a bizarre balm when coming from a creature that would’ve eagerly destroyed them all. Eventually, keeping it in her grasp, her eyes turned towards the rest. “You guys all right?”

the echoes of the thunderclaps

Frustration at his own continued failure gives way to surprise, then suspicion, then distinct relief as the Kingmaker falls and finally - finally - lies still.

He knows he wasn’t utterly useless, at least he’d managed the damn barrier, but his gratitude is immensely obvious as he lands and shifts on the shore near Melita. Clapping her shoulder and giving her a small shake, Harper lets his complicated expression speak for itself; impressed, relieved, tormented, grateful. “Gods, good shooting Melita,” he murmurs.

“Nothing more than some intense bruises I think. Lucky as hell, I’d say.” All of them. Haulani included. Harper hadn’t known if they’d be able to stop it before it began damaging the city, and he’s grateful as hell that they had. Looking at the two discarded materials, Harper grabs the teeth and marvels at the size. He doesn’t really care which he gets (aka if Jack objects he’ll trade) but the size alone really drives home the narrow margin of their success.

- - -

Harper checks in with everyone and grabs the teeth, but he’s flexible if Jack wants to trade.
