Even being so up and close to him, there were somethings (an accent mostly) that made him both want to keep Bart talking longer while simultaneously wanting him to say nothing at all.
“Nothin’ really to say. Both of ‘em don’t think I did enough.” Which he agrees with. But he’d reached a point where he simply didn’t know what to do next at all.
