Homemade bread sounded very appealing to Alys; there was just something about it that made it better than the bread one could find in shops or markets. She wasn't quite sure what it was, but the thought of it made her mouth water as she waited for Noah to take a helping of the stew to his wife. While she waited, she heard the sounds of the couple speaking in hushed voices, though she couldn't make out exactly what was said. It was none of her business, anyway, and she'd never been one to eavesdrop. Perhaps one day she would meet Cordelia. She wondered if his wife was as pleasant a person as Noah had turned out to be.
When Noah returned, Alys took her filled bowl with a word of thanks and cut herself a slice of bread. Tearing off a small piece of the bread, she dipped it into her stew to let it soak up the broth before popping it into her mouth. It was delicious: different from a beef stew, but in a way that was simply interesting rather than better or worse. The bread, though, was just as wonderful as she'd anticipated, and it was with some difficulty that she waited until she had swallowed her mouthful before saying, "This is really good."
