Sunjata snorts, trying desperately to return to that ease of before, when things hadn’t gotten so complicated and murky and helpless. It fails, though, because he hums a slight note of agreement when she mentions his bag of tricks. “Tell me about it.” He rumbles, taking another drag of the cigarette as he floats the water out of the window, only to hear the splat on the stones below, watching her as she leans over to see where it had gone.
Taking the edge off of what? Everything.
He doesn’t get a chance to respond, though, because she continues with apologies and he leans his hip against the window frame, giving her his full attention even as the lines of smoke try to distract him. “Don’t be sorry. It’s been a busy night with a lot happening.” And he, most of all, was left with confusion and the burning sensation that he’d overstepped. “I’m the one that should be sorry. And I am.” He pauses to flick the cone of ash out the window, giving him a reason to avert his gaze. “I’m sorry that I can’t be what you need.” He can’t tell her that he loves her, or that he ever will the way she needs to be loved, but those truths feel too far out of reach to voice for someone that struggled with expressing himself in the first place.
