Maea was scared, as she stared up at the Spire. More terrified than she had ever been in her entire life. Behind her she could practically feel the edge of Rory's disapproving stare cut into her back, the hopes and fears and wishes of a thousand people and more like a weight on her shoulders. Was this how Roana had felt when fighting the demon? Was this the weight of responsibility? The mountain an aspiring leader had to shoulder? It was heavy, so much that her knees could buckle at any time.

But the Hollow was dying. If the land died, the people she wanted to protect would die as well. Not today, perhaps, and not tomorrow. But slowly and surely as the passage of time, they would die. The land would fade, the water dry off. Trees and plants and all the creatures of the forest, reduced to dust and drifting off on a dry wind... She could see it, like she saw it every night in her dreams.
They couldn't let The Voice escape... but she could not let her people perish either.
In the end, she chose the people. It was not an easy one to make, but she chose as the Spire flared up in a blue light and her bones reverberated in tune with the earth. Maea had dressed herself in plain hunting leathers, sturdy boots and with Ludo's black scarf wrapped about her waist like a sash. She had braided the hair and wrapped it around her head and donned a simple hunting knife. Almost in an afterthought she had added a handful of nails to one pocket - potential weapons in a pinch - and slung a full waterskin over the shoulders, and left her home. Not knowing whether she would ever see it again.
Now she stood teetering on the edge, watching Roana's back disappear into the Spire ahead of her.
"Forgive me, Ludo. If I survive this, I will never go against the will of the Old ones again. I swear it."
The whispered prayer was simple but heartfelt. Then Maea breathed out a trembling sigh and began to follow the soldier, down.
