Cheerful and tenacious in equal measure, and curious beyond all else, she began her journey on a mission to find those her mother once called family. ”Fine.” There was nothing but exhaustion in Loren’s voice. Seeing as he was stuck in this pit there was effectively nothing he could do to get away from Remi if the other man was determined to remain here. But even as the alchemist nuzzled up against the Launceleyn, there was no response from him. Just because the other man thought there was something here for him didn’t mean the summoner needed to give the alchemist anything. Remi would figure it out eventually: Loren wasn’t going to be able to offer anything besides his skills and information ever again. No conversation, no friendship, no affection. Certainly no love.

hope keeps us breathing, just to kill us in the end
It was a dark and troublesome thing to be loved and left yet again, by the same man, in nearly the same way. The marked difference was that of course Loren was here in all the normal ways, but he wasn't. He very much wasn't.
In the minutes and hours to come, the alchemist would worry and wonder over and over just what had happened. How the summoner had promised a fresh start on his life, had finally put to rest all that had been left unclear about the past, only to withdraw ever further. Did you do this intentionally, Remi wanted to ask as the pair both pretended to sleep that night. Did you tell me, so you would have a reason to push me away? Was it even true? It truly was a black sort of love that tended towards cruelty rather than discomfort. The alchemist had already showed he could take pain and still forgive. Though Loren—his body at least—had demonstrated its ability to withstand pain, perhaps other parts hadn't.
But Remi didn't know and with the Launceleyn's utter retreat, there was nothing to do but wonder what it was that had gone wrong.
And so breaking away from the Launceleyn when the alchemist worried that the utter stiffness of the man's body was going to leave real tension in his muscles, the alchemist shifted into a raccoon form to press his nose softly against the summoner's. As a small beast he'd stay, unobtrusive and out of the way, until the fae came to let the summoner out of the pit.
