flora

Glancing over her shoulder, the sea of glass a flat expanse of shimmery near-white ice, Flora looks back to Amhran with her eyebrows raised. "Yeah, maybe. She agrees, her eyes widening animatedly in time with the chime of her laughter.

"Actually...yeah, that's basically exactly it." Finding the combination of the demigod's knowledge and ignorance rather charming, Flora grins up at him. "It's an Accepted thing. We're supposed to go around and pay hommage at all the shrines on a regular basis." It was one of the things that kept them in the god's good graces, she thought, though she supposed there was nothing stopping anyone else from doing the same thing. "I've heard that although Safrin isn't a big fan of the cold, that the starlight here is the most pure out of anywhere in all of Caido."

Blinking as the large presence beside her faltered ever so slightly, Flora paused if only to make sure that the tall man was alright, before chuckling under her breath. "He probably would have if I'd asked him. He did have his hands full with Erebos, though." Shrugging, now it's Flora's turn to falter as Amhran pulls his sunglasses off revealing a face that looked entirely fae and far younger than she might have otherwise expected.

"Oh no, I couldn't. Besides, they'll be too big for me. You're really sweet for offering, though."

the harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun
Following Flora's gaze and realising quite abruptly how flat the Sea of Glass is, he scoffs and shrugs his shoulders. "Point well made," he concedes, falling back into step with her as they find the bank of the ice field and begin to pick their way around it, following a well-worn trail that appears as though it's been walked by dozens of people; enough that even the freshest snow can't entirely cover it up.

"Oh, I see," he says, packing away both the knowledge about her pilgrimage and her status as an Accepted, his head tilting up to examine the - currently - endless blue sky. "The stars are very beautiful here," he agrees. "I don't think I've paid enough attention in the other places I've been to make a comparison for you, though, so you will have to tell me." Assuming they ever meet each other again, or ever find themselves out here when it's dark. (Dangerous AF but whatever).

Smiling to hear the reason Deimos might not have given Flora a proper map, Amhran can only nod his agreement. "My brother can be a handful," he agrees, before slowly replacing his sunglasses at her refusal. "If you're sure. Please let me know if you change your mind - I wouldn't want you to be uncomfortable."

Laughing, Flora can only offer Amhran a crooked smile. "If it's this cold during the day, I'm not sure I could stand being out here at night." She admits. Perhaps if she took her duties as an Accepted more seriously or if she ever really wanted to impress Safrin, but just now all she had the energy for was leaving her small offering by the goddess's shrine and then immediately getting back to somewhere that was warm.

"Brother?' Nearly stopping in her tracks, Flora blinks rather comically up at the young demigod, giving her head a slow shake. "But, then...are you Deimos' son?" How was that even possible? And with who?

And how?!

Letting her eyes rake over the demigod, even if he'd been rapidly aged at a shrine the way she had, surely with how big a deal the Evergreen had made about being pregnant, even in Torchline she'd have heard about the birth of her first child? Unless Deimos had stepped out on her? Or was this...gods, was this Amalia's child?

"I'm sure some people in Halo aren't bothered by the cold - not as much as I am, certainly," Amhran says with a grin; perhaps they have a secret he isn't aware of (it's the Arcane Academy, Amhran, not that you would know). "If I ever find out how to see the stars safely out here, I'll let you know." In the meantime, they continue along the banks of the Sea of Glass, and in the distance, he thinks he sees something that might be an altar.

But of course, then Flora is asking about his family, and he tilts his head down at her with a smile. "Oh! No, no - we agreed that I would not call him my father," he says warmly, before half remembering some lesson Evie had taught him about how to explain their unusual situation. "I am a demigod of Rae," he says, as if he's practiced. "I was grown in Evie's greenhouse as a sapling, before I became this. I consider her my mother, and Erebos to be my brother, but we are unrelated."

"It's probably a bit like how we're used to the heat, down in the south." Flora hums in agreement. At least in Torchline, the sweltering climate came with ocean swims and cute outfits; here in Halo, the cold made everything bulky and deathly in her opinion.

We agreed? Frowning up at the man at her side, the queen gave her head a small shake to indicate that as with his I'm flora too! comment, it hadn't shed any more light on the situation. His explanation does, turning the surprise on Flora's lips into one of awe as the word demigod rings in her ears, before she can feel a frown wanting to settle on her mouth.

Didn't the world have enough demigods already?

"I seeeeee." The Doubletake hums before she too catches sight of the shrine sparkling in the distance, only for her mind to finally make the connection between what Amhran had said earlier, and his being a Raeling. "Oh! So that's why you said you were flora!"

Nodding his agreement - it probably is very much like that, yes - Amhran at least can't say that he's all too used to either extreme at this point in his life. Not unlike some particular orchid Evie had cultivated, whilst he certainly won't die if things aren't just right, he definitely notices the discomfort.

Having slowed his steps to let Flora come to grips (or not) with his explanation, Amhran's eyes light up to hear her last comment, and he picks up his pace again until the shrine is almost on top of them. "Yes, that's right," he says with a nod. "Not any more, though - not entirely, anyway." Because really, who knows what kind of power is budding and blooming through his veins, waiting to be released?

"Here - is this what you were looking for?" He gestures to the delicate little altar, mainly sculpted out of ice, where small offerings have been left that have already frosted over. It's likely that the water in Flora's little piece of Torchline will end up the same way, but it doesn't make it any less pretty in Amhran's opinion.

"I mean... I bet you are still, a little, anyway." Flora murmurs in response, glancing at the demigod as if she might be able to suddenly peer through his clothes and see to the bones of him, wrapped neatly in ivy or otherwise entwined with flora. "I've actually met Rae a few times." Flora doubted that Rae would be any more caring toward their demigod than any of their other creations (i.e., her), but even so. "They've helped Torchline repel the void from our lands, and they've even given me a quest for one of their lilies." She explains sounding a touch proud, before glancing in the direction Amhran was gesturing in with her eyes narrowed.

"Must be!" What else could it be?

Grinning at the demigod over her shoulder, the queen hustles toward the shrine as quickly as she'd able given that her footwear isn't entirely appropriate for the snow. Reaching the shrine, Flora pulls out the small charm, placing it in the center. Had there been more snow she might have drawn a little star to accompany it, but the shrine was all smooth ice and stone. For you, Safrin, she thought to herself before straightening and tucking her hands back into her pockets.

"Oh yes, probably," Amhran agrees with a warm chuckle. "It's certainly been a transition, the parts of me that aren't flora any more." Eating, drinking, sleeping - every day of his existence had been a school day for those first few weeks, and he's still learning plenty now, too. "You have?" Smiling brightly now, he steps aside for Flora to leave her offering, politely waiting to bombard her with his questions until she's finished.

Hanging back, only to pick his pace back up when she moves away from the altar, he heads for the edge of the trail where he can put on his ice skates. "That's amazing, that you have met Rae. What were they like? My memories of them are fuzzy." And then some. He'd been little more than a sprout when the twins had placed him in Evie's care, after all.

"Maybe they will again one day?" Flora suggests, feeling strangely compelled to reassure the demigod. "All of the demigods have some sort of shift...I don't see why yours couldn't be a flora instead of a fauna."

Dusting off her knees as she stands and then drifting back toward Amhran's side, Flora adjusts her mittens as she nods. "They are......" Said in a sing-song voice as she tried to think of a nice way of saying that they were aloof and detached and rude, the queen grins. "They're really smart. They healed me when I was infected with the void, actually." Flora had nearly forgotten about that; funny how that memory seemed to want to just slip away. "I've never seen them not together the way they normally are, but I have seen them speak on their own which was neat." Maybe it wasn't unique, but of the five or so times she'd been in their presence, it had only happened once.

Waiting until the demigod had his skates on, Flora held out her hand to help try and steady him. "Since you're just a bit taller than me, remember not to overbalance because I won't be able to stop you." She warns before wrapping her hand tightly around his as he penguin-walked toward the ice.

Though it took a bit of trial and error (and limbs everywhere), eventually Amhran got to the point where Flora wasn't only pulling him along, but that he was properly skating. Or, well, if not skating, at least he wasn't falling.
