Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.
Congratulations, Niki!

As Alys spoke, a breeze swept through the glade, rustling the leaves in a way that almost seemed intentional. The trees whispered secrets, and the air seemed to grow charged, as if something unseen was listening. The Eight of Wands lay there, practically glowing in the slanted Leafchange sunlight, its eight rods seeming to shimmer with the promise of adventure.
Suddenly, a shimmer passed through the air between them, subtle at first, like a mirage. The glade seemed to ripple, and then - just for an instant - a ghostly shape appeared at the edge of the clearing. It was difficult to make out, almost like a trick of the light, but it hovered there with a kind of authority.
The presence was unmistakable now, a soft yet insistent force that seemed to beckon closer. The apparition - or was it just a distortion? - moved toward a large tree at the glade's edge. As it drew near, the bark of the tree seemed to twist, forming an opening just large enough to peek inside.
Within the hollow, something glinted faintly, catching the light just enough to be visible from where they sat. Whatever it was, it seemed to pulse in time with their breaths, an invitation waiting for action.
"Ru might be sad t'see us go," he admitted ruefully. "But she's pretty focused on Sunjata these days. I dunno if she'd mind much, especially if we were back for half th'year." It wasn't like they were leaving King's End forever, after all. "An' I do know my sisters an' Rhi an' Noah an' Soleil an' Lily would be glad t'have us all back." He knew Sah would be, too, but he wasn't about to ruin a good frenemyship by saying it out loud! Flowerbirth and Longheat in Halo, and Leafchange and Deepfrost in King's End? That didn't sound so bad.
He turned his attention to the next card of the usual three she drew for him, tilting his head like a confused dog at the art before looking to Alys hopefully. He knew she'd make it clear to him, and her smile was an excellent sign. He smiled tentatively back, his expression easing and becoming more genuine as her explanation unrolled and she laughed. The wind stirred their hair and Tal automatically reached over to tuck a strand of hers back behind her ear--
The shimmer gave him pause and Boreal raised her head from the branch, whuffing curiously but not looking concerned. Tal followed her gaze to the edge of the clearing and the figure there, watching wide-eyed as it moved to the tree. He finally tore his attention away to glance at Alys, a prickle of excitement in his chest. Whatever it was didn't feel threatening... "Let's check it out," he whispered to his partner, a little breathless with wonder.
Pushing himself up, he offered her a hand and then led the way to the tree, looking between their wavering guide and the siren call of the shiny thing hidden in the heart of the trunk. He bit his lip, finally feeling a little nervous, but after another moment of hesitation he reached in to close his fingers around whatever it was and withdraw it for examination.
The reading over and their future seemingly leaning in the direction of splitting their time, Alys was about to inquire further about what their plans to live in both Halo and King's End would entail, but the wind stirred suddenly, causing Alys to reach hastily for her cards, scooping them up and tucking them safely away, where the breeze couldn't carry them off. Tal reached up to tuck an errant curl behind her ear, and she smiled at her partner only to see his gaze skirt past her face and onto something past her. Boreal sat up and whuffed softly, and even Sascha reappeared from wherever she'd hidden herself, padding closer to the humans as she stared over Alys's shoulder.
The seer turned where she sat, twisting to look at whatever had captured her family's attention. There was a figure there, and her breath caught in her throat. It didn't feel like a threatening presence, but Alys wasn't keen to trust a mysterious figure who left shimmering somethings in trees. Still, Tal beckoned her forward, and she accepted his hand, following him towards the tree. "Careful," she warned her partner as he reached blindly into the tree.

Inside the hollow, nestled among the roots, was a small, intricately crafted compass. Its casing was made of a silvery metal that seemed to glow faintly, as though it held some internal light. The compass needle spun lazily before coming to rest, pointing not north but toward some unknown direction, as if it was attuned to something specific. Strange runes were etched along the outer rim, shifting slightly when viewed from different angles.
The compass felt cool to the touch, almost as if it was alive, responding to the presence of the one who held it. For a moment, the air seemed to thrum with an energy that hinted at movement, of places distant yet connected. It was as though the compass held the memory of travel, of skies and open spaces. There was a sense of purpose to it, a hint that this was no ordinary tool - perhaps it was capable of far more than it appeared, waiting for the right moment to reveal its secrets.
At the edge of the glade, a ghostly figure lingered, almost hidden behind the trunk of a tree. Its form was indistinct, shifting like mist in the dappled sunlight, but there was something purposeful in its stance. The figure seemed to watch, a silent observer, its gaze fixed on the compass now in Tal's hand. It was as if the apparition had been waiting for this moment, for someone to claim the item hidden within the tree.
The ghostly presence gave no sign of hostility, only a strange sense of expectation. It remained at the periphery, half-concealed by the tree, as though reluctant to intrude further. The air around it shimmered faintly, and for a brief moment, it almost looked as if the figure nodded, a gesture of acknowledgment or approval, before slowly fading back into the shadows of the glade.
"I think it's okay," he whispered back reassurance, but he moved slowly and cautiously as he closed his fingers around the compass and drew it out to examine it. He watched the needle spin and then settle but... it definitely wasn't pointing where it should. It kind of reminded him of his Obsidian Compass that he'd traded Maea for all those seasons ago, but this one felt...
Well, even more special. Tal bit his lip and squeezed Alys's hand, studying the runes with a squint as he tried to make sense of them. Something tugged at his attention as he tilted the compass to catch the light and he glanced up to see the ghostly distortion again, feeling its eyes - or whatever passed for them now - on him. He hesitated for a moment and then lifted the compass towards it--
But before he could complete the action it was fading away. Tal released the breath he hadn't realized it was holding and turned back to Alys with a rueful smile. "I think maybe it's... a gift, kinda. Like whoever that was wanted someone t'find it. Maybe so it wouldn't go to waste? It's some kinda magic, I just can't figure out what it's pointin' to..." His nose wrinkled as he wrestled with the mystery. He didn't waste too much time in bafflement, however, and he shot his partner a sly grin. "Want t'follow it an' see if it leads t'somethin' excitin'? Like a treasure?"
Alys might have questioned her partner's sanity as he reached blindly into the tree, but as moments passed and nothing seemed to happen, the seer began to relax - enough that when Tal pulled out a compass that she was fairly sure didn't point north, she felt a spike of curiosity. Looking up, she saw the figure fade away and blinked in confusion. Had it been a ghost that had led them to the compass? Had they been brought to this very spot by some twist of fate to lead them to this moment?
But her confusion was short-lived, tucked away into the back of her mind as she focused on the compass in Tal's hand. There were some kind of runes on it, but she wasn't familiar with their origin. And as Tal invited her on a new adventure, she couldn't help the slow (if cautious) smile that spread across her face. "Lead the way," she said, gesturing in the direction the compass appeared to be pointing towards.

As Tal and Alys prepared to follow the direction indicated by the compass, the needle began to glow faintly, its light shifting between a pale blue and silver. The glow pulsed in a rhythmic pattern, almost like a heartbeat, subtly urging them onward. It seemed that the compass knew its purpose, as though it had been waiting for the right hands to carry it forward.
From the corner of the clearing, the ghostly figure reappeared briefly, its form shimmering with a sense of urgency. It hovered there, just long enough for Tal to notice, before it gestured—an ethereal hand pointing in the same direction as the compass needle. The apparition's presence gave a final, silent push, an encouragement that they were on the right path.
The compass responded in kind, the runes on its casing beginning to shift again, slowly aligning themselves into a pattern that almost resembled a map—something intangible yet deeply familiar. As Tal moved, the compass seemed to adjust, the needle fine-tuning its direction with each step, as if it was seeking something very specific.
Occasionally, a shimmer would pass through the air, a brief distortion that hinted at the presence of the ghostly figure following them at a distance, keeping watch. Each time Tal and Alys changed course, the compass pulsed gently, reinforcing their movement. It felt as if the artifact had some kind of connection to the apparition—a link that transcended the physical world, urging Tal towards a destination that was somehow both distant and closer than they realized.
As they walked, the compass grew warmer in Tal's hand, the pulsing becoming more pronounced. There was a feeling, almost a whisper at the back of his mind, that this was more than just a tool for finding direction. The compass had a purpose beyond the physical realm—it was a key, an anchor, something that could bridge places separated by more than just distance. The runes glowed brighter for a moment, the light spreading along the casing before subsiding, as though waiting for the right moment to fully reveal its secret potential.
The ghostly figure lingered at the edge of their awareness, a silent guardian, ensuring that they stayed on the right path. It was clear now: whatever lay ahead, the compass—and the spirit that had guided them—held the key to something extraordinary, something that could reshape their journey entirely.
With Alys by his side and their hands entwined, Tal felt like he could face just about anything - even a haunted compass that seemed to pulse in time with his own heartbeat. But maybe that was just his imagination? Though there was no denying the glowing needle or the shimmering runes. Something made the courier glance up just in time to catch the faint presence reappearing long enough to urge them on, and he grinned at Alys. "Maybe I should get readin's done more often?" he teased her gently, but his eyes were quickly drawn back to the compass as it seemed to shift in his hand again and he tugged his partner down a new path through the Glade.
He followed the needle and their ghostly guide with increasing eagerness, his usual wariness set aside in this moment of shared adventure. Boreal trotted along at their heels, not really understanding what was happening but happy to be along for the journey. She made a game of trying to chase down the apparition as it wavered in and out of sight, pouncing at it like she did at Ludo's rags - with about as much success. Not that it deterred the burly companion, nor did her antics distract her human from his course.
This was something special. Tal could feel it in his bones as he tightened his grip on the compass and squeezed Alys's hand in a combination of excitement and reassurance. "This is... this is big," he breathed to her, awe in his voice. "Where it's takin' us... it's like I can feel it, tuggin' on my soul. We're almost there..." He didn't know how he knew, but he did, and he hurried his pace just a little faster - though never so fast that he'd leave Alys behind.
They followed the compass and its ghostly companion, hands entwined and eyes peeled for glimpses of the figure. "Maybe you should," Alys agreed, wrinkling her nose playfully in Tal's direction. "I didn't realize I was quite this magical. My clients will be jealous." She followed down the path Tal discovered, Sascha padding along at their heels. The little ursur wasn't quite as keen to chase the apparition as Boreal, and she huffed a quiet warning to her friend to be careful. The ghostly figure seemed alright, but one could never tell with spirits.
Alys wasn't sure where they were going or why they were being called there, but she'd never been one to question fate. This was far beyond the mundane nature of everyday life, and she could tell already that she would remember this experience as one of the most magical she'd ever experienced - and as an Abandoned, that was saying something. So she followed along behind Tal, gripping his hand encouragingly as they neared the end of their journey through the Glade.

As Tal and Alys follow the compass's guidance, the artifact glows brighter, the runes shifting and forming intricate patterns. Each pulse of light feels like a silent message, urging them onward. The compass needle spins occasionally, always reorienting toward a single direction.
The ghostly figure reappears from time to time, guiding them from a distance, encouraging their pace. Boreal's playful attempts to chase it are met with an amused shimmer from the spirit, acknowledging the dragon's curiosity but staying focused on its task.
As they move deeper into the glade, the air changes, thick with anticipation. The compass vibrates more intensely, warmth spreading through Tal's hand. The runes align into symbols resembling constellations, linked by invisible threads. The ghostly figure gestures toward an ancient tree before fading once more, and the compass pulses with a bright blue flash, pointing directly at the tree.
Suddenly, the compass vibrates at its fullest, and energy engulfs Tal and Alys. The world blurs—the glade, the tree, the shimmering spirit—all dissolving into light and motion. A heartbeat later, they find themselves standing on the deck of the Peregrine. The familiar sound of creaking sails and rushing wind fills their ears as the compass dims, the runes settling into a quiet glow.
The ghostly figure is gone, but the sense of having been guided lingers. The compass, now cool to the touch, seems to have fulfilled its purpose—at least for now.
Congratulations! Tal has received:
(Cira to come up with a clever name) | A small compass that can teleport the user and one other back to the Peregrine so long as it is no more than 1 region away.

"I knew y'were," Tal assured his partner smugly, giving her hand a fond squeeze. Alys was the most magical person he knew, though it had nothing to do with her Abandoned powers. As excited as he was by the adventure, he couldn't imagine anyone he'd rather be sharing it with.
Following the needle and guided by their ghost, not even Boreal's antics could slow down their passage through the Glade. The courier's grip around the compass was tight, afraid to drop it, even as the power within it seemed to increase. His eyes moved constantly between the needle and the landscape around them, making sure he didn't trip or run them into a tree but not wanting to miss any of the changes the compass was undergoing, either. As heat began to spread between his fingers he whistled for Boreal to rejoin them, and for once the dragon obeyed without further mischief. Her curiosity was just as piqued as his, and she didn't want to miss a moment of the action!
The tree loomed up before them, huge and old but not obviously magical--
And then the world shifted and Tal reached out instinctively to pull Alys close as his feet settled onto the gently rocking planks of a boat he knew like the back of his own hand. He drew in a sharp breath and looked around, eyes wide with wonder and dawning realization. A very startled dragon and a small bear were next to them, none the worse for wear, though Boreal immediately flapped up to the top of the mast to perch there and snort down at Tal in consternation. "It brought us back t'my ship," he breathed. "Like... like Noah's capital compass. Only it's... it's more like a Peregrine compass? There's gotta be a better name for it..." he trailed off, brows furrowed deeply as he rested with his arms around his partner on the deck of his home away from home.
They followed along, wandering through the Glade and following the path laid out by the compass. It was strange; there seemed to be little rhyme or reason to where they were going. If the compass was leading them to some kind of treasure, she would have expected it to point in a singular direction, but their path weaved this way and that, until the seer had no idea where they were in relation to where they'd been. Sascha followed along closely, keeping an eye on the figure that coaxed them along, watching Boreal with a mixture of concern and envy. She was too shy to play with the pair, but she secretly longed to join her friend.
Boreal rejoined them before too long, and Sascha relaxed as they approached a large, clearly magical tree. Alys eyed it with interest, but before she could get a closer look, the world shifted, and they suddenly appeared aboard the Peregrine. Alys blinked with surprise from her place in Tal's hold, a small gasp of wonder falling from her lips. "That's... that's amazing!" she said. And quite useful. Her partner had a habit of getting into trouble, and having something that could immediately return him to the ship made her feel a lot better.
As for a name, though... Alys shrugged, making a face up at her partner. "I don't have a clue what to call it," she said apologetically. It was a compass, a navigator, a polestar... but beyond that, she had no ideas.

Tal grinned down at Alys, enjoying the face she was making up at him. Unable to resist, he leaned down to rest their foreheads together and nuzzled her nose. The adrenaline of the chase, the magic of the compass, and the relief at having been transported somewhere safe made him practically giddy as he squeezed his partner affectionately close. "Maybe I should call it th' Eight O' Wands," he teased. "That was th'card that seemed t'start us off on this adventure!"
But even Tal had to admit that it was kind of a mouthful to say "the eight-of-wands compass." His grin turned rueful as he let go of Alys with one arm long enough to tuck the new treasure safely into his pocket. "Maybe I'll call it th' Constellation Compass," he mused. "On account o' all th'stars on it that aligned t'send us here."
And after that, they sailed the Peregrine back to the Glade to retrieve their picnic supplies and blanket.
