Not moving from his place, he continued his gentle assault with his arsenal of pinecones. Sol still zipped this way and that, bobbing up and down as he snagged new or discarded ammunition. It gave Zavien the means to plant his feet and focus on Liam's reactions, ensuring that he didn't push too far even as he saw the sweat and quickened breath.
"I know how to use a bow - just as all Dragoons do - but it's never been my weapon of choice. There's something honorable about facing someone down with a sword." Not that the other ways weren't honorable, but he found it resonated with him more, skill facing skill. Shrugging his shoulders, Zavien gave the man a smile. "That's why I'm hoping this item can help increase the range of my sword strikes." Throwing another pinecone, he added, "Tal's daggers gave me the idea. Have you met him?"

'Cause she's a cruel mistress And a bargain must be made
Liam tried not to be distracted by the dragon zipping this way and that, bringing his bonded more ammunition - but it was hard, when the sun filtering through the trees above sparkled on his golden scales. With each flare of light, Liam found himself glancing towards its source before cursing himself and refocusing on the task at hand. He thought, perhaps, that he was nearing his limit. His movements were slowing, his breath coming quicker; he shook his head, trying to get rid of the sweat dripping into his eyes.
Zavien's words were a welcome distraction. Liam understood what the other man meant - it was why the ex-dragoon fought with a sword, as well. As for whether or not he knew someone named Tal, Liam wracked his brain and came up empty. "I'm not sure," he admitted. "It doesn't ring a bell, but that doesn't mean I haven't met him at some point." (He has, once - but didn't recognize the nickname.)
Finally, drawing a breath and dodging out of the way of a final pinecone, Liam paused, setting the rock down and stretching out his back. "Maybe a breather would be nice," he said with a laugh.
But oh, my love, don't forget me When I let the water take me
He could see that the man was tiring quick, the strain evident in the lines of his face and the tension of his muscles. Throwing another pinecone, he watched carefully for the limit to approach as he shrugged his shoulders. "Well, if you haven't, you will eventually. He travels a lot, delivering packages and whatnot." Tal had a way of meeting and knowing everyone.
Sensing that they were done when Liam set down his rock, Sol paused mid-flight, grumbling as he tossed aside the pieces he'd been planning to bring. The Dragoon wasn't nearly as disappointed, giving the man an understanding smile. "Works for me." Dropping the last pinecone into the unused pile, Zavien looked around at the stretch of snow patched fields and thick trees. Nothing was familiar and he turned to Liam with an air of piqued interest. "We could stretch our legs for a bit? I haven't been around these parts of Halo before." That was, of course, if the man had time for it.

Having sat down the rock, Liam became acutely aware of how heavy it had been. His arms felt suddenly feather-light, as though they might simply lift into the sky and drift away. To dispel the strange sensation, he stretched first one, and then the other across his chest, then shook them out. By the time he'd finished, he looked up to find Zavien inspecting their surroundings. "Sure," the soldier agreed. "I've only been to Halo a few times, and never outside the Citadel." It was part of why he'd wandered out today: curiosity, and perhaps a little boredom with civilization.
Liam fell into step beside Zavien, hands in his pockets as they strolled along. He'd been a hermit for so long that he wasn't sure what to talk about now they they'd gotten through with training, but he was very accustomed to comfortable silences. Thus, time passed before he spoke again. When he did, it was an easy conversation, and they flowed from one topic to another with the ease of old friends.
