Alys
this night is alive with the smell of insane —
Alys walked with Sohalia through the Wildwood to the Mathair. She'd run into the Luminary in Sidhe Village and, after explaining the outcome of the pool party, Sohalia had agreed to team up with her to search for Vi's Roses. It still seemed like a hopeless hunt to the Fateweaver, who had been here since the party and failed to see even a hint of golden thorns in her questing.

"They must sprout overnight," she was explaining, Sascha on her heels. "Because I swear I've been through here and there's nothing, but I don't know what to do except keep looking." Her companion refused to go further than a few feet from Alys, cowed by the loss of her bonded's partner. The seer reached down to rub a comforting hand over her head. Even if everything seemed hopeless, she had to believe that there was a way to fix this.

There had to be.

Sohalia
Don't try to wake me up
Even if the sun really does come out tomorrow
Sohalia had been in Sidhe Village when she'd run into Alys. It was odd to find the seer without her partner, but all had become clear when the Fateweaver had explained what had happened at the pool party. Soh had been so wrapped up in curing Noe that she hadn't realized that Tal had been infected, and she was so upset at the thought that she'd immediately agreed to help Alys search for a rose. She herself had come for the same thing, although she'd been intending to give it to someone who could use it against Starfall. Still, she hadn't hesitated to help Noe, and she reasoned to herself that this was just as important.

Even if she felt a little twinge of discomfort at the notion of failing to help the greater good. Again.

"You could appeal to Vi," Soh suggested, hopping over one of the Marhair's roots as she hunted for anything that looked remotely rose-like in appearance. "That's what I did when someone I cared about was infected." Of course, she knew it might not be that easy. The gods didn't always answer, for one, and for another, the quests that they gave out - especially for a rose - were challenging. But it was something else to try.

Tarak swooped in from overhead, chittering in her ear as he landed on her shoulder. "Tarak says he didn't see anything from overhead." Not that she'd expected him to, not when the foliage was so thick. No, they'd be better off doing this the old fashioned way.

It wasn't that Alys hadn't thought about going to Vi. It was, of course, an option. It was just that, as an Abandoned, she didn't think she'd have much success. She'd already appealed to Mort, and that felt rather like she'd used up her luck. She didn't regret it, of course - it had brought a piece of her soul back to her - but it did feel like it limited her options.

Not that she wouldn't try it, when she got desperate.

For now, though, she would keep looking in the forest. "I'll keep that in mind," Alys said, but she was clearly distracted as she searched beneath a bush. "Thanks, Soh." There was nothing in the bracken, and the seer straightened with a frustrated sigh.

It was luck, really, (and a lot of MP) that had brought Vi to Sohalia when she'd needed his help, and she could understand why Alys might hesitate. Even aside from the fact that she was Abandoned, Vi was an intimidating presence. Nothing like Mort, who was gentle and kind. Soh still admired Vi greatly, of course, and she would always be indebted to him - but she had to admit that he came with a very different vibe.

They kept looking, combing through the brush. Time passed as they searched, often in silence. What was there to say? Tal was infected, and Soh had nothing to offer that wouldn't sound like empty condolences. So she elected to say little, unless it was to call out that an area she'd searched was clear - again.

They searched until the sun started to sink towards the horizon, and they ended up with nothing to show for their efforts. Frustrated and near tears, Alys followed Sohalia back to Sidhe Village, agreeing to stop for the night only because she was uncertain that she'd be able to find her way through the ever-changing woods in the dark.

But in the morning, she would return to her hunt, desperate and determined, because what else was there for her to do? She couldn't give up, not when the alternative to her search was leaving Tal to the Family and his fate.

And that, she simply couldn't do.
