'Cause I don't remember who I was before you
The rain continued. Everything and everyone became coated in a layer of mud. Hair was plastered to foreheads and necks, clothes stuck to skin, and the conditions as thunder rolled overhead were downright miserable. Even the donkeys pulling the wagons seemed to be over it, their tails lashing and their ears pinned as they plodded ever onward with their lightening loads of flowers.

Colt and Lena did their best, poking holes into the ground and sticking their roses in, hoping that the flowers would stay upright. Unfortunately, the muddy ground was not quite strong enough to hold the stems in place, and they would find that their efforts were largely in vain. For each rose that remained upright, three more fell over, and they would need to redo their work before moving on.

Sunjata and Alys fared better, in large part thanks to Sunjata’s magic. The ‘umbrella’ that he created worked well to shelter them from the worst of the downpour, and they continued to dig and plant at a steady pace.

After all was said and done, the teams were neck and neck. Colt and Lena had moved farther, even with their setbacks, but Sunjata and Alys were moving more quickly through the rain and mud. They were threatening to overtake the others with their efforts, although the rain was now so heavy that the teams were well out of eyesight and hearing distance from one another. Now that they were on the final stretch, it simply remained to press onwards.

Colt
Each fallen flower sends her further over the edge. All her playful edges have been lost to sharpness as each splatter of mud and raindrop that lands in her eye makes her bristle. She's withdrawn into pure silence at this point. Any word she speaks won't be kind, so she sets her teeth against each other, her anger something for her to chew on.

It's not the grime, or the wet, or any part of the work and the storm itself that's got her sucked up on tiptoe like a cold-backed filly fresh under saddle. It's the timing. She was trying to do this and race the weather, but now that it's broke, her plans have all gone to hell and are soaked through in the most miserable way. She can enjoy a good storm certainly, but not when she's trying to accomplish shit in it, not when it's things that can't wait or would be better done dry.

With tight shoulders and a tighter lip, Colt does as she had been trying to avoid this whole time. She crouches and scoops a hollow in the ground with one hand, planting a flower with the other and packing the ground around it before moving on to repeat the same thing a bit further down.

Colt will shove a flower down your throat if you talk to her rn, but she is planting away, properly now

SUNJATA
clipped wings and you're the one holding the bone saw
now things are getting so out of control
It’s diligent work that they do - focused and quiet, though Sunjata doesn’t mind. A bit of brief and idle conversation here and there that comes and goes with plenty of ease sparks the Flood’s focus, helping to bolster his magic and keep it as the wide umbrella of water above them to try and keep it less of a torrential downpour than it otherwise would be.

And it seems to work out well for them. The rhythm is easy, with Sunjata digging a hole and moving onto the next space to carve out the earth for Alys to fill with her rose, that by the time they get further away from the ones they’d planted and his magic isn’t useful for It anymore, the rain is able to begin watering them, ensuring they’d take root.

Sunjata keeps the same strategy and keeps digging for Alys to plant and keeps the water umbrella up!

Lena
even when no one was looking
I was still kind
The rain continued and the exhaustion toiled – narrowing down to figments in her fingers, eventually chilled to the bone. Foolish, perhaps, to not have acquired all her heavier garments and raincoat, but to Lena’s credit, she hadn’t thought they’d be out for so long, inundated and soaked, drenched and saturated.

Even their work seemed bent on evasion. She couldn’t hear anything from Colt, so she bowed her head, sighing and thinking about that warm shower or bath in her near future again (maybe with a fine cup of tea after, laden with blankets and curled up on her couch or bothering Zavien with her company). Her hands, cold as they were, continued in their persistence, trying to find some stability for the flowers.

'Cause I don't remember who I was before you
With the deluge well and truly underway, and the ground beneath their feet growing muddier by the minute, Colt and Lena would find that they'd established a rhythm at long last. It might not have been as fast as they might have wished, but their pace was steady, and they pressed on, nearing the finish line as Sunjata and Alys came back into sight through the downpour.

The Archon and the Seer worked more quickly than the others, if only because of Sunjata's magic. With the worst of the rain held off under the makeshift umbrella, they were able to plant without rain dripping down their foreheads and into their eyes. If either looked up, they would find that Colt and Lena were growing steadily closer, as their diverging paths wound around to meet up, making a large circle around the Barrows.

There were only a few more roses in the wagons now, and the donkeys were seemingly content now that the stormfront had moved through. The creatures waited patiently as their assigned teams worked in the chill and the wet, unfazed by the downpour. They were all in the home stretch now, and as they raced for the finish line, nothing else seemed like it was going to go amiss.

Round 8! Last round, and then I'll do a closing post (and announce "winners").

Just keep swimming planting.

Colt
On a different day, Colt probably would have happily slung mud at the sight of Sunjata nearing the finish line, or thrown a loop at toes to send people face first into the quagmire. As it is though, she is utterly focused on the task at hand, fully devoted to these damn flowers and ensuring they stay upright when the ground is a slurry. That seems to be the only way to be free of the work, as every other attempt and shortcut had rounded back at her, proving haste makes waste time and time again like a lesson she can't help but forget when it suits her.

Her boots are thoroughly coated in the muck, as are her arms and the knees she kneels into the puddles and the mire with in order to scoop out a hole and pack the stem back into place. Her clothes are soaked through and sticking to her, her hair dripping like a mess across her face. Each thing and irritant to keeps her voice silent and her movements quick and sure.

Lena
even when no one was looking
I was still kind
Lena remained composed, despite the shaking in her fingers and the incoming rattling of her teeth against one another, chilled to the bone. The competition winding along didn’t spark at her either, still concerned with the flowers staying upright, rather than how fast they could accomplish the task – it hadn’t served them well in the last few rounds regardless. Where there was no beating the storm, they could at least ensure the stems would stay, offering those protections that, while fleeting and no longer necessary, still needed to be honored in order to heed a god’s request.

Scooping and moving more of the mud, or any residual soil that hadn’t been soaked in the deluge, the Caretaker continued her work, head down, enduring, formidable, and still thinking about home, in the near distant future.

SUNJATA
clipped wings and you're the one holding the bone saw
now things are getting so out of control
The last round is upon them and as they work diligently to continue to plant the rest of the roses. The wagons seem to dwindle down to the last of their collected amount and as they work Sunjata can spot Colt and Lena in the distance, slowly drifting closer and closer together. Once they’re in an easier eyesight, he flashes a wave of his draconic hand as he continues to dig out holes for Alys and when they get close neigh, his magic should soon benefit the other two women, too.

Once they’re within 60ft of him, the Flood will be able to keep that umbrella of water above them to collect the rain that continues to drizzle. Lighter now than it had been during the worst of it, but the Flood works harder and quicker with the end finally in sight.

Sunjata keeps digging and the closer they get to each other, his magic will start to keep the rain from drizzling down on Lena and Colt, too and help them with the rest of the planting.

'Cause I don't remember who I was before you
With the end in sight, all four of them seemed to double down on their efforts. As they neared the finish line and Sunjata's umbrella began to aid Colt and Lena as well, the two women would manage to move more quickly. Perhaps it was because they were planting individually - and therefore moving twice as fast - but they would run out of flowers first, making them the winners of the little competition that had blossomed between groups.

Alys and Sunjata weren't far behind, though, and just as their loop was completed, the rain began to slacken, although it didn't abate entirely. With wagons empty, Alys stood and wiped her brow with the back of a wrist (for all the good it did) and called the other three together. "That should do it! Thanks, everyone, for the help. Let's get back to somewhere warm and dry - and then I supposed Sunjata and I have some laundry to do."

---

Thank you all for participating! Colt and Lena win!
