Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.

Sohalia led the way to the Leap of Faith, surreptitiously steering them clear of other areas of the Oerwoud where they might run into trouble. The trip, fortunately, was uneventful, and when the crested last rise and the view came into view, Sohalia sighed happily. Welcome to the Leap of Faith.
The Oerwoud spread before them, reaching as far as the eye could see from the bleached cliffs upon which they stood. Clouds floated by lazily beneath their vantage point, looking so corporeal that one might think they could leap onto a passing one for a nap. Up here, the world was awash in color: the clear blue of the sky above, endless and everlasting, and the brilliant hues of the Oerwoud’s forest ranging below.
Soh walked lazily to the edge, where she sat upon her haunches and gazed out at the lands below, her ears twitching constantly, always on alert for danger at their backs. While she could shift into her snowy owl form to flee if something came upon them here, she didn’t know what the other girl might be able to shift into, so it never hurt to be careful.

Stepping out of the tree line, Nove was blown away by the sheer vastness of everything around her. The sky opened up as a massive backdrop to the collage of colors below, plants and trees of every kind and color harmonizing. Her eyes widened to a near-unimaginable point, sparkling blue depths soaking everything in with awe. Woooow!!! You're right! This is amazing!
She bounded up to the edge of the cliff, leaning forward as a breeze ruffled her fur. It elicited a delighted giggle that was only interrupted by her gasp. I think I can see Torchline from here! It's just a sliver in the distance, so it was hard to tell if it was actually her home, but Nova didn't care, bouncing along the edge to look closely at it all.
Now that her childish enthusiasm had returned, she didn't hesitate to begin her line of questioning. Why do they call it the Leap of Faith? Do people ever jump from here? Is it dangerous? What's under the mist? Although her voice rambled on, her eyes were fixated on the forest below, noticing something new with each glance.

Nova was just as excited as Soh had hoped she would be, and the Attuned grinned to herself as she watched her new friend’s awe. She seemed to be fearless, bounding up to join Soh at the edge of the cliff, peering out over the horizon with a delighted giggle and a gasp of glee. So, too, was she curious, bombarding Soh with a rush of questions that left the Luminary giggling.
I’ve jumped, she said, but I have a snowy owl shift, so… I don’t think the average person will take the leap, no. There’s nothing at the bottom but mist and rocks. She hoped it was enough warning to deter the young woman beside her from testing it out for herself.

Staring down into the mists, she wiggled with the desire to do just the opposite of what Soh recommended. Oooh. I'm so jealous! I haven't found what my others shifts will be yet, but I really hope my next one has wings!! She couldn't wait to feel what it's like to fly through the sky, going as far and high as the wind could take her. Standing at the edge of the cliff, she could almost imagine it as the breeze pushed against her whiskers, her eyes closing to picture what it must be like.
Unable to stay still or silent for long, Nova moved to another part of the cliff's edge, tailing flicking and ears swerving to capture everything all at once. Meanwhile, she asked Soh, Do you have any other fun shifts?

Soh watched the other girl with a mixture of wariness and amusement. She was absolutely precious, her enthusiasm catching, but Soh didn’t want to be responsible if she attempted the Leap. Fortunately, Nova didn’t seem inclined to test the mists below, and though she stood at the edge of the cliff, she did not, thankfully, jump to her death. Flying is amazing, Soh sighed dreamily. Her snowy owl shift had been her first, and she’d always been partial to the feeling of the wind in her feathers. Maybe, if your next shift can fly, we can jump together sometime!
Nova stalked down the cliff’s edge, peering out over the landscape, leaving Soh sitting at her spot by the edge. The Luminary sprawled out along the edge, lying on her side in the sun, enjoying the warmth upon her fur as she looked out to enjoy the view. A StarKnight Swordfish, she said lazily in response to Nova’s query. I highly recommend a water shift - you can explore so many fun places!

The offer was met with an abundance of enthusiasm, her head spinning to look at Soh. I'd love that! Maybe my sister will be able to join too! She could imagine the three of them doing aerial movements through the sky, colorful feathers fluttering down. It was such a fun idea that she was nearly bursting with hope to discover her next shift soon.
And not only could she explore the sky, but the sea?! Nova bounced, tail tip nearly trembling with excitement. That does sound fun! The mention of the StarKnight Swordfish unlocked a memory from her first time on the ark, making her eyes widen. I saw one from Jack's ship once. It was really pretty! Starlight had trailed behind it in a multitude of sparkling colors. She could have watched it for days.

Soh offered a feline grin to her new friend as Tarak landed beside her, joining her to sun himself along the edge of the cliffs. The more the merrier, she said, her voice patient. She remembered a time when she'd been just as full of life and joy. It made her sad to remember how innocent and naive she'd once been, but it was hard to stay upset when Nova was so excited.
Her tail twitched as she listened, tilting her head. She'd met a Jack once, a captain or something who had expressed interest in her maps. She wondered if it happened to be the same man; Jack wasn't exactly an uncommon name. They are beautiful to watch, she admitted. And to swim with them is so fun. It opened up a plethora of possibilities to have shifts that could fly and swim, and she found herself hoping that Nova would indeed find out just how wonderful a variety of shifts could be soon.

Soh's encouragement of her enthusiasms was met with further delight, her paws dancing along the edge of the cliff. Ooooh. I can't wait! For wings and fins and fur and claws! When she unlocked more of her powers, she'd be able to go anywhere and everywhere, and no one would be able to stop her!
Humming, she continued to look down the cliff when something caught her eye. Oh! What's that down there?! Let's go check it out! Without waiting for Soh to argue - or even realize what Nova was looking at - she was sprinting away, back into the woods and down towards the mists beneath.
