Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.
Congratulations, Niki!

Ludo's Woods were arguably Alys's favorite part of the Wildwood, if only because it was where she had met Mort and he had returned Sascha to the land of the living. But even beyond that, there was something that the seer found comforting in the eerie stillness, the dimly lit lanterns, the soft whisper of the wind through the trees. It felt like the area had been touched by fate, like if she did a reading here, it would be blessed by the gods.
Today, though, she didn't linger. Instead, she and Sascha combed the forest floor, searching for any hint of crimson or gold that would indicate that a mystical rose had been found. Sohalia accompanied them a short distance away. Somewhere among the trees, Tarak squawked, only to be answered by the caws of a murder of crows. "See anything?" Alys called out. Maybe today would be their lucky day.

"Not yet," Soh responded, ducking beneath a low-hanging branch to check around the back side of a tree. Huffing out a frustrated breath, the Luminary returned to Alys's side. Overhead, Tarak bounced from tree limb to tree limb, rushing down one bough until he sat directly overhead. Soh whistled, the sound low and long, and the griffin leaped onto her shoulder, where he perched impatiently as his bonded resumed her search.
"It's kind of creepy here, isn't it?" she asked, clambering over some roots that stuck out of the ground. It was a hot day, and her hair clung to her neck in sweaty clumps. She didn't know how Alys could stand being dressed in pants; Soh had chosen shorts and a tank top, and she was still dying.

Alys chuckled at Soh's question. "It's not so bad," she protested, reaching out a hand to brush her fingers against a pretty lantern. She'd never been one to find things creepy, usually managing to find the beauty in everything - even somewhere like this, that others seemed determined to avoid. "Besides, maybe it has a rose."
And if it did... Alys already had a plan for what she would do, for how she would save Tal. And if she felt a little guilty about using the rose on him rather than for the greater good, well... that was just too bad. She wouldn't leave her partner to his fate. Not when there was something she could do about it.

Soh glanced at the seer dubiously. She'd been to Ludo's Wood before, of course, for both mapping expeditions and for hunting Vi's Roses. But despite its eerie beauty, she couldn't see herself returning for any reason other than those. Still, if Alys liked it here... well, to each their own.
And maybe the Fateweaver was right. Maybe there was a rose hidden amongst the roots and branches and lanterns. And if there was, Sohalia hoped they would find it quickly, if only so that they could leave. "If you say so," Soh said, shrugging as she continued her search.

You've encountered the OG random event! This allows you to skip one levelling requirement with the character in this thread. (Unfortunately does not count for characters over level 10, how sad.)
The pair continued their search in relative silence, calling out every once in a while to check on each other's progress. As the day wore on and the heat got worse, Alys eventually called her friend back into the deeper parts of the wood, using the shade to avoid the worst of the Longheat sun. Still, no matter where they looked, it seemed that they were cursed, for despite their best efforts, no roses appeared.
As they made their way back to Sidhe Village, Alys couldn't help but feel discouraged. How long would her partner have to remain in the Family's clutches before she could cure him? And would she even be able to, once she had a rose in hand? Or would he see her coming, and fight against a cure?
But that was a problem for future Alys. For now, she had to find a rose.
