Kaisel
"A funeral parlor?" he squeaks out, stiffening a bit as his gaze slides around all the décor with newfound attention to detail, half expecting to see bones lining the edges of the pictures and flesh pulled taut over the lampshades. "That's uh, very creative of you to turn it into a home." Definitely not creepy as fuck. Maybe Niki isn't a ghost, but he's not right, it'd seem.

Kaisel surveys the pendant retrieval over his teacup, trying to use the liquid to calm his frayed nerves. He holds his breath for just a moment, straining to see if there's a flash of light or a flare of heat, something mystical as ghostly skin coasts over iron surfaces, but aside from the clear struggle, Niki manages it like any normal man, which at last Kaisel can admit to. He breaths out the stress from his nose as he drinks. "Sorry, about all that," he admits a bit sheepishly now, feeling all the more foolish for falling to Flora's trick. "I'll have to find some way to get back at her," he muses aloud, returning to his train of thought from earlier for a moment.

"Did that happen," he motions towards Niki's cane, "when you were... undertaking?" The image of a heavy corpse rolling onto his leg comes to mind, however undesired it is.

NIKI

"You say creative, I say necessity," Niki says with an easy shrug, holding out the pendant for Kaisel to take back. "I am an orphan of the Greatwood. I grew up in a group home before I was apprenticed here. This is the only house I have ever remembered living in." The only real house, he ought to say, that doesn't have dormitories instead of bedrooms, that has enough books and solitude and space for his preferences.

As for all that, Niki offers a quick smile and eases himself onto the arm of the sofa opposite to where Kai has seated himself. "That is alright. I will also consider how best to remind her that, while human, I can be ghostly in my own right." As the dragoon has observed with the salt.

Unsurprised that the subject of his bum leg has finally surfaced, Niki absently brushes a thumb over the top of his cane; dark wood, polished with care and use and with a small moth carved near the top, evidently it's as much a sentimental item as a necessity. "No, it has been like this since I was a child," he explains. "I do not know if I was born this way or if an accident occurred that I do not remember, but... it is the way it is."

Kaisel
He extends his hand to reclaim the ghost detecting metal, stuffing it into a pocket, though he pauses in doing so to glance anew at Niki. "An orphan?" he repeats with a slow carefulness, like the word, or the idea is scary in its own way. He catches the stare he's leveled on Niki and glances back down as he finishes putting the pendant away, leaning over his knees on the couch now, teacup nearby. "I'm sorry," he says with a fullness too akin to pity. "I can't imagine what that would have been like." Truly, he can't. His family is insufferable sometimes, but also, they're everything.

"I know what that's like though," he says with more normalcy now. "Always being in the same home," he clarifies quickly. "I have never lived anywhere else until very recently, because of the Stormbreak evacuation." A frown settles, the memory of it still fresh and stinging. "We moved to King's End. It's been uh," he searches for a word that isn't unkind, "just as ghostly," he finally settles on for the region that has dedicated large portions to graves.

A smile flashes in response to the subject of Flora, and Kaisel sips for his tea again, staying lazily hung over his knees as Niki explains the cane, which as it turns out is more than just for being scary. "If I was you," and Kaisel is certainly glad he isn't, "I'd get it turned into some kind of machine leg. Become even stronger than a normal one." If not a ghost, why not a cyborg?

NIKI

"An orphan, yes," Niki says easily enough. "You do not need to apologise. I was too young to remember my parents, so I suppose you could say that I do not know what I am missing." And ignorance is bliss, or some other platitude. "If it helps, I cannot imagine what it is like to be burdened with a family." His smile is playful, though the expression fades to hear about all that Kai has had to overcome lately.

"I have heard as much about King's End," he says with a soft nod. "I hope that you will be able to return home soon." Much sooner than anticipated, in fact, though neither of them know that yet. Following Kai's gaze to his cane, though, Niki's eyes all but light up at the implication, and he tilts his head. "I would as well, were I able. But such talk tends to be a little bit blasphemous, given all that happened with The Voice and the Ascended."

That doesn't mean he can't make some inventions of his own though and try, right?

"Well, now that we have settled the matter of my living situation," in a literal sense, too, "please feel free to stay as long as you like. The Sidhe Village is a short walk from here as long as the woods do not turn you around, but as you can see, I am not lacking for space."

Whether Kaisel wants to stick around and risk being haunted by whatever else might be in Niki's house, though... well. That's on him.
