Damien
The climb to Frey’s shrine was easier this time. Maybe not because the weather had softened, but maybe because Damien had. The cold still bit at his face, the snow still crunched under his boots, but it felt less like the tundra was testing him and more like it was watching.
He carried no weapons, no haul — just the warm clothes on his back and a small pouch. Aria padded beside him, tail flicking against his leg as she slowed to match his pace. The silver buckle of her new collar caught the firelight of a nearby brazier when she turned her head.
The shrine took ornate shape out of the white, distinct against the snow and stone. A few offerings lay covered in a sheet of frost, roots and stone twined together like muscle and bone. Damien paused before it, drawing in a slow breath.
He crouched, brushing snow from the base until smooth stone showed through. Then he tugged at the string holding the pouch taut.
The talisman that fell out glinted faintly in his palm — the snow leopard’s claw, capped in simple silver, hung from a cord made of the same leather as Aria’s collar. A single alpine sprig, dried and pale green, was braided through it, its scent still faintly sharp.
He set it out along the shrine with care before resting his hand beside the claw. "Frey,"
“I did as you told me,” his voice was low but steady, quiet in the wintry hush. “Tracked one of her kind without being seen. Learned what trust costs. Listened, watched. Built a bond.”
He hesitated, then added, “Didn’t think I’d learn this much from a cub. But she’s taught me more about life than any one person ever has.”
He lifted his hand away and stepped back, snow falling soundless around them. Aria promptly plopped into a nearby snowdrift, as if on cue, earning a sideways glance from him.
The offering lay there, simple but deliberate, every piece telling a quiet story. Damien waited to see what would happen, not even realizing he was holding his breath.
Damien is turning in his Frey Quest he received in a hunter's oath:
↣ Complete a thread spending a night tracking a snow leopard across its territory without attracting its attention — ghost of the peaks (he and Theea went back to the Fangs to look for another snow leopard, lying in wait until one appeared and tracking it until dawn)
↣ Complete a thread gaining Aria's trust in whatever way feels most appropriate to Damien — [o] lessons in loyalty (protected Aria from an aggressive dog and got her a big fish after)
↣ Complete a thread with another character who has a companion and learn how their bond was formed — [SE] all is not frost (learned about Deimos and his unicorn's bond)
↣ Complete a thread introducing Aria to another companion — [SE] scratch the surface (Aria met Lena's sassy snowball companion.)
