Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.

There was unfinished business on the island in the sea. Inroads had been made, but the festering infection on the Arclight went deep, and there was more to be done. Another flower to plant in the bowels of the Family's stronghold, and a Mirewyrm to hunt through its own tunnels.
This time there were four. Two demigods, with Noah at his side. Two of Safrin's favored as well, with Sah and Jack joining with various degrees of enthusiasm. They each made their way to the beachhead established on Starfall's shore by the heroes who had come before them, gathering to grim purpose. The Tidebreaker welcomed Noah and Sah with warm clasps of forearms and a stoic nod of appreciation. For Jack there was a bow of gratitude and a quiet: "Thank you, Captain."
He waited for Sah to hand out the new and improved gas masks that had been so useful last time, accepting his with a nod as he spoke for Jack's benefit.
"The Mirewyrm came at the death of a smaller serpent, last time, while I harvested a Void crystal. It did not have eyes. I do not know if it has ears. We gravely wounded it and it fled deeper into its tunnels, then used its strength to shake them, bringing the stones of the island down upon us." He inclined his head to the masks they now held. "It could also exhale poison gas that blinded us, and which sickened the Lily as we tried to plant it. It moved more swiftly than we could chase it." He nodded grimly to the other men. "Safrin warned of further dangers in the tunnels below. I do not know what they are. But I believe we should try to lure the Mirewyrm to us when we are past the Lily's influence. Killing a smaller Void creature worked last time. It is worth trying again, if we can find one."
And down they went. Hadama activated his armor to lead the way, the light of the starry tines of his trident casting the tunnels into a dim mix of shadows and glints of light from freshly broken stone. Down, past the place where Rae's Lily had been planted, casting a pocket of sanctuary in the twisting depths. It was there that he donned his gas mask, securing it carefully before continuing into the unknown Crush beyond.
Hadama brings everything on his profile, except for the Void Crystal and Owlbear Talons.

Sah gripped Hadama's forearm tightly before giving Noah's shoulder a squeeze while nodding at Jack. Determination and wariness were prevalent, but he shoved it down and got to work handing out the masks after double-checking that his own was secure. "Here. These will block out any fumes and will also allow you to see five feet through any environmental effects." It wasn't much, but the added visibility might come in handy.
The hybrid listened quietly as Hadama briefed them all, jaw ticking at the reminder that there were multiple threats ahead of them. "I can partially shift and try to track something down." Even if he just shifted his eyes and ears to that of his wolf form, the hunter was fairly confident that he'd be able to find something to attack and bait the Mirewyrm into action. He didn't want to partially shift his nose, however, concerned that the gas mask wouldn't fit properly after.

Noah flew hard and fast, the cold wind biting at his feathers as he left Halo’s frozen spires behind. His griffin form cut through cloud and gale, eyes fixed on the warm glow rising far ahead. By the time the frost melted from his wings and the scent of salt and wet void-earth filled his lungs, he knew he was close. He landed on soft, protected soil, shifting back with a breath that steamed in the lingering chill of the early morning.
He greeted Sah and Hadama as warmly as they greeted him, though his jaw was set at the edges in the presence of violent purple and darkness. A brow of curiosity lifted as Jack appeared, but Noah offered him a dip of his head with respect. He had seen what the captain could do several seasons ago as they fought against one of the void-creatures that threatened Torchline. Turning his attentions back on Hadama, Noah listened and made sure to keep all of the information he gave.
I don’t know if we will have to track anything down. From what I know, what’s on this island doesn’t want us here. How are we going to protect the rose until it does what it is supposed to? He asked across the attuned bond, taking the gas mask from Sah and placing it over his head and face. His eyes flicked to Jack and then back to the others. He wished that the captain would be able to speak across the attuned bond with the other three, because then they didn’t even need to waste air with speaking. He followed the other men.

Don't worry, Noah - Abandoned have been apologising for being Abandoned instead of Attuned for longer than some parts of Caido have been inhabited. For the captain's part, he does happen to hear what the Forsaken has to say (even if it's via a backdoor), but given that he's neglected the use of his lips, he remains quiet on the matter.
Standing, silent and grave as he takes in the island and its void-touched soil, he offers a brief nod to the gathered party, dropping the stub of a cigarette to the ground and crushing it under his heel before reaching out to accept the offered gas mask, turning it over in his hands a few times.
"Wait," he rumbles before putting it on, arching an eyebrow at Hadama, "the thing you fought last time down there is still alive?" That absolutely bodes well for this little venture, and Jack bites back whatever else he might say to slip the mask over his face.
Glancing over his shoulder, only briefly, to The Ark hovering overhead at a safe distance, he shoves his hands in his pockets and gestures with his chin for them to proceed. "Whatever we do," he mutters, "it'd be wise to focus on one thing at a time." The Mirewyrm. Whatever else is lurking down there. The rose.
"An let me know if we need to charm our way past anythin'." He nods down at the pendant resting against his skin, just visible through the open part of his shirt.
Jack arrives with everything on his profile with the exception of The Ark (and its additional items) and Seven. There's also a knife in his boot and one in his belt, and a coil of rope over his shoulder.
The Ark is hovering overhead at a safe distance.
He accepts the gas mask and puts it on, has a bit of chit-chat about strategy, and waits to proceed.

Gone were the carved stone walls of the upper descent—here, everything pressed inward. The ceiling sagged low, forcing the taller among them—Sah, and Hadama —(#shortking Jack is fine) to stoop with bent backs and tensed shoulders. Stone scraped across armour and clothing alike, damp and uneven, slick with condensation or something less natural. Only two could walk abreast at a time, and even that felt like too much. Shoulders brushed the crumbling walls. Boots threatened to clip each other’s heels with every careful step.
The light from Hadama ’s trident flickered over stone that no longer seemed entirely stone. Veins of violet crystal pulsed dully, barely brighter than the fungi clinging to the ceiling like rot. And the floor beneath their feet had…changed. At first, it seemed like ordinary dampness. A softer give, a subtle shift in traction. But the further they walked, the more it became noticeable—a tackiness to each step. Not quite mud. Not quite water. Something else. The ground clung just slightly to soles and heels, a barely-there resistance, like the trail was watching them walk it.
The air, too, had taken on a peculiar weight—no gas, no smell, not yet—but a tension. Like a breath held just behind the next bend. The kind of silence that warned of something not asleep, but waiting. Welcome to the Key Quest. This is a hard Level 12 key Quest.

"Thank you, Sah," he murmured at the offered gas masks. "You may need to use your earth magic to stabilize the tunnels as we descend." In case of preemptive Wyrm attacks. To Noah he nodded and gestured with a thumb to the reinforced box on his back that held the precious Rose. "This worked to protect the Lily last time. For now, it is what we have." He paused and then tilted his head towards Jack. "Speak out loud as long as you can, Noah. Captain Jack Barclay cannot hear the Attuned bond." Not, at least, that Hadama knew of, and he would not leave an ally out of their communication. And now names were known all around, if they hadn't been before.
And speaking of Jack...
"It is unfortunate, but yes," Hadama confirmed grimly. "Your plan is a sound one. I would prefer to end the Wyrm today if we can, but the flower has priority. If we cannot destroy the guardians they will simply retreat, however. Until they can go no farther and we will be forced to face many." Instead of few. He tilted his head at the offer of charming - a tactic he had not considered when facing the Wyrm for... well. Reasons that might become obvious soon enough. But he nodded slowly in acceptance. "If you see an opportunity to use it, I will follow your lead."
And then they were headed down into the increasingly sticky tunnels of the Crush. The increasingly low tunnels. Hadama ducked and then hunched further, his braid shielding his bent neck from the stone but catching uncomfortably as his jaw tightened in discomfort. The tackiness beneath their feet was increasingly unpleasant as well--
Stickiness?
"Wait," Hadama rumbled, holding up a hand and kneeling to examine the floor more closely, trying to determine the source of the stickiness. What was causing it, or had made it, and whether it was dangerous to them. Hadama answers questions, offers subtle introductions, and reminds the team to communicate out loud. He regrets being such a tall drink of water and then kneels to examine the stickiness on the floor, using his INT 1 to learn about its source/danger levels.

It's hard to really give expressions in a gas mask, but that's probably no bad thing since it saves Hadama the face Jack pulls at the idea of we when it comes to facing anything later on this gods forsaken island. Nevertheless, he offers a slow nod. "Make it someone else's problem, huh? I can get on board with that." Which probably says everything about the overall colour of the morals when it comes to that plan.
He does perk up at the idea of having an Earth mage with them, Jack tossing a lazy salute to Sah as they begin the descent into increasingly narrow tunnels, the captain dropping back to allow the taller men to go first - and apparently have to bend themselves in two in order to do so.
Idly sampling the Tidebreaker's thoughts as they go deeper, Jack's eyes and ears are keen for anything out of the ordinary (though what's ordinary, really, in a place like this), and he stops almost at the same time that Hadama calls for them to wait. "You recognise it?" he asks, of the sticky stuff the demigod bends to investigate.
In the meantime the captain turns to face the way they've come, quietly listening.
Jack drops to be at the back of their little formation and turns to see if he can sense anything moving around in the dark behind them. (Uses INT 1)

A simple nod was all Noah gave to acknowledge the information — that Jack couldn’t reach the bond (which he already knew, and didn’t like), and that the box would protect the rose. He had meant if it needed protection after it was planted, but perhaps that was answer enough — it was only vulnerable beforehand. At least, he hoped that was what it meant. He hoped Vi’s power, running through petal and stem and thorn, down into the roots, would be enough once it touched the void-tainted soil. That Vi, in his greatness, would spread healing and cleansing across this damned island.
The way the cavern twisted and closed in around them made the demigod’s stomach turn. Sah would definitely need to reinforce the walls with magic if it came to a fight. Still, if they managed to plant the rose without conflict, Noah wouldn’t complain. He had faced many before, with a league of heroes at his side — dragons, demigods, Ascended, and finally the Core itself. So to say he would be prepared if the void titans retreated only to strike later would be true. Prepared in heart, at least. In stoicism, grit, and quiet tenacity.
As Hadama stopped the group and crouched, Noah immediately partially shifted. Enhanced with the eyes of his griffin form, sharp and intense, Noah peered above the crouched king to search the darkness for any foe.
While Hadama crouches and inspects below, Noah partially shifts his eyes to see better in the dark and uses his INT to get a feeling for whatever might be ahead of them, watching them.

With the vague hints of a plan, the team began their trek. The hairs on the back of Sah's neck stood up as the oppressive air greeted them. Walking beside Hadama, the hybrid kept one hand on the tunnel's surface as he made his way through the tunnel. It was uncomfortable to be slightly ducking, and he was suddenly grateful that he wasn't any taller.
The sudden tackiness of the ground was unpleasant, and he stopped as Hadama moved to investigate it. The others, too, began to investigate their surroundings.
Reaching with his magic deep into the earth, the hybrid tried to sense any shifts in the tunnels. Not to find a route per se, but to see if he could feel any movement within. If something was burrowing in the tunnel or scraping the earth, he hoped to be able to pinpoint it before a potential ambush.

Not with air or breath, but with pressure—stone pressing inward, walls curving in ways that felt less architectural and more digestive. Overhead, the ceiling dipped low enough that the taller men had to hunch with every step, vertebrae grinding beneath the strain. The passage narrowed further ahead, closing in like the throat of something waiting to swallow.
Behind them, the tunnel seemed to forget it had ever opened.
Ahead, only more dark.

"... Preferably not," the Tidebreaker rumbled to Jack's quip. Given that Hadama would likely be one of those facing the combined might of multiple Void guardians, he had a vested interest in whittling down their numbers now. But he also had promises to keep, and he would not endanger himself or the others with him for mere glory or pride.
While the others sought ahead, behind, and around them, Hadama looked beneath them, touching the substance that stuck to their booted feet. His mask was just as stoic as his natural countenance, so no one but Jack would know the frown within his thoughts as he considered it. "I am... uncertain what this is," he admitted slowly. "Though it is not unlike a spider's webbing." Something with which he had become far too familiar during the cloud spider infestation several years back.
Then again, it wasn't entirely like the webbing of any Caido spider he had encountered either.
Raising his gaze from his kneeling position he peered ahead. "And it is coating the entire tunnel." He tilted his head to Sah, and glanced back at Jack, uncertain of the full extent of the Captain's magic. "I would recommend going back to the entrance of this area. Before we encountered this... webbing. Where we have more space. And seeing if it can be set on fire." And if that fire could be directed down the narrow, choking tunnel to clear out their prey for them.
Though that would still leave the Mire Wyrm. Examining the walls more closely, Hadama tried to determine if they would withstand the Wyrm's thrashing attack if it chose to shake the island while they were inside the Crush. Hadama shares what he's learned about the stuff coating the tunnel - not much, unfortunately - and recommends backing up to the entrance to the Crush and seeing if they can send fire down its length. He uses INT 1 to try and determine whether the cramped tunnel would hold up under the Mire Wyrm's shaking attack.

With a small shrug as if to say each to their own, Jack leaves future trips down into this Alice-in-Fuckeryland murder hole up to someone else. Evidently, they've got enough on their plates as it is. He frowns over his shoulder as the way back is swallowed up in the darkness, and the way forward becomes increasingly like a choke point.
"Spider webbing?" he repeats with a scrunch of his nose, peering up and around them and then down at his boots, as if to check how sticky the stuff is. "Two fuckin' guesses what's down here with the Mirewyrm if you're right."
While Hadama's suggestion isn't a bad one, call Jack keen to stay alive, but he's not excited to be the spearhead of any trip back the way they come. "I ain't got a light source, and while there wasn't anythin' back there before, there might be now. Can't our Earth mage use his superpowers to open the tunnel wider - or make a new one for us to use?"
Jack is understandably adverse to going back the way they came, and suggests instead that Sah can make a new pathway for them to use that isn't covered in webbing.

”This stuff is all around the tunnel and keeps going down,” Noah said, eyes scanning the path ahead. He still had to crouch, his back pressed against the low ceiling. Every brush of his jacket against the web-like material sent a shiver down his spine. The faint scraping sound made his skin crawl, and though he kept his face mostly stoic, discomfort twisted across his features. Giant spiders, maybe. If they were anything like the ones that plagued Halo after the war… well, he doubted this would be a pleasant experience. Not that it ever was.
“Let’s move forward. Get this done,” he said once it was clear retreat wasn’t an option, jutting his chin toward the rose strapped to Hadama’s back. “If we sit here and worry too long, we won’t have a chance.” His voice held a steady confidence. He’d said it before: they wouldn’t need to find the void. It would find them.
“Fire in quarters this tight might not be the best idea,” he added. “Not until we’ve got a target — and a way to keep from being burned to cinders.” Fire needed space.

Sah grimaced at Hadama's report. "Spiders? Lovely." Finding a more spacious area to burn any looming arachnids sounded like their best bet. Jack's idea wasn't horrible, and the Wild Thunder hummed contemplatively, "Making a brand-new path is risky." He wasn't keen on trying to dig a new tunnel only to lead them straight into a vat of acid or a monster's mouth. Or getting lost and destabilizing the path that they were currently walking on. Debating the pros and cons for another heartbeat, Sah sighed. "But I'll see what I can do. Just be ready if anything jumps out."
Reaching for his magic again, the hybrid firmly pressed a hand to the tunnel wall and began to carve out his own path, doing his best to keep it parallel to the web-coated tunnel so that they keep moving forward. As he did so, he let his eyes and ears partially shift to his wolf form to better see what he was doing.
