Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.
Congratulations, Niki!

A feline hiss slips past Caly’s lips as the mud creature evades her swipe – replaced shortly after by the snarl and frustration that escapes her. Wind whips at her fur from likely another cause, making her move precisely in time that the mudling launches a glob of itself at her, her tail flicking in precise movements as the tide jaguar takes in the creature in front of her again.
Snarling yet again, the young attuned launches at Mudling 1 again, sharp claws extended to swipe at the mud in the hopes that she might actually connect this time to do some damage rather than missing again, especially if it means she’s getting so muddy and messy in the process, she’d like to have something to show for it.
Caly attacks again with her tide jaguar shift to swipe at Mudling 1!

Something’s apparently changed – the courtesan can feel it almost immediately as the wind swirls around him, not used to having this much strength within the confines of his usual abilities. His surprise is quickly swallowed down, however, because he’s slamming the wind into the mudling’s body, watching as chunks of the beast scatter into the clearing behind it.
Not quite able to take a moment of reprieve to celebrate it as the mudling flings itself at the tide jaguar, the courtesan latching onto the wind yet again in order to try and avoid the attuned as he lashes out with another whipcrack of wind at the first beast and waits to see if it connects again.
Thorn uses his air magic again to try to attack Mudling 1 and also tries to avoid hitting Caly in the process!

The others are all in the clearing, battling it out with the mudlings, but Noe stands along the fringes, unsure what to do now and feeling that she's played her hand. She has her daggers and her sling, but both feel foreign as she tries to determine how to best contribute to the scene before her. She isn't made for this, for the ebbing, flowing tide of battle.
But still, she takes a rock the size of her palm from the ground, settling it into the sling. Perhaps, if she stays far enough away, the mudlings will keep their attention on those better equipped for such a fight. Taking aim at Memory Mudling 1, she swings her sling around and around, waiting until the others are out of the way before letting the rock fly. Hopefully it strikes hard and true, but she doesn't wait to see the collision. She's already moving along the outskirts of the battlefield, searching for a new rock to send sailing.

Noe waits for the others to move out of the way, then uses her basic sling to throw a rock at Memory Mudling 1. Then she moves along the edge of the battlefield to search for another rock.

Liam charges through the rain-slick clearing, mud sucking at his boots as he closes the distance to the faltering ooze. His Oakblade flashes in a clean, downward arc, cutting through the creature’s knees—or what passes for them—with a sound like water being split. The blade sinks deep, sending a tremor through the mudling as its lower half caves in, collapsing into a heap that sloshes uselessly against the ground.
Calypso surges in right behind him, the blur of her tide-jaguar form low and fast. Her claws rake through the creature’s chest, dragging glowing lines of seawater through its mass before the cuts collapse in on themselves with a hiss.
Hawthorn 's magic follows, a rush of wind that howls through the clearing, scattering the half-solid creature into quivering fragments that spatter across roots and puddles. The will-o-wisps flicker from the shockwave as the ooze struggles to re-form, what remains of it shuddering like a dying candle flame. Noe waits until Liam and Caly shift aside, then lets her sling fly; the stone zips through the rain but veers just wide, skipping across a slick root before vanishing into the underbrush.
The first mudling, stubborn to the last, lashes out at Calypso with a sluggish swing, but its arm melts halfway through the motion, splattering harmlessly at her paws. Across the clearing, the second mudling tries to imitate its companion, rearing up to hurl another glob toward Thorn. The shot misses by a wide margin, smacking into a tree trunk instead, where it oozes downward like a sulking puddle.

The squelch as Liam's blade passed through the mudling's knees was satisfying, if a bit unsettling, and the soldier spun to keep the creature in his sights as he backed off, allowing his fellow fighters their turn at attacking. The tide jaguar swiped at the mudling, the other man sent a blast of air, and the girl slung a rock from a sling - altogether, they were making short work of Memory Mudling 1, but the fight wasn't over yet. "We've almost got it!" he shouted as he readied for another attack. "Don't forget about the other one!"
With that in mind, he held his sword carefully in front of him, keeping it between him and Memory Mudling 1. When he saw an opening - and when the others were clear - he swooped in with a jab, aiming for approximately where he thought the creature's heart - if it had one - might be. He didn't linger, though, withdrawing his blade quickly and backing away, attention flickering between the first mudling and the second, ready to shift gears if the first was defeated.

Liam stabs Memory Mudling 1 where he thinks its heart might be. Then he tries to move out of the way of the others to give them a chance to attack without hitting him.

Finally her claws connect with the creature, watching with feline satisfaction surging through her as the mud parts beneath her sharp claws. Her whiskers twitch with precision as she leaps back from the beast in time for the wind to rouse again. She takes in the scene around her, the way the creature shudders and sulks and Liam goes in for the kill.
His suggestion is met with the tide jaguar turning her focus over to mudling 2, feeling the wet squelch of mud as it falls upon her pale golden fur. Snarling slightly at it, the young attuned watches as the next creature snags a portion of itself to throw at the assumed magic user, flying wide as she moves to get within range of the second mudling, slashing out yet again with her claws and a jaguar’s growl of intent.
Caly moves to mudling 2 and swipes at it with her claws!

He thinks he could really get used to this – the power that comes with the wind magic at his fingertips. Cleaving and carving through the air like a phantom but still dealing enough damage each time to see the creature break further, splattering across the clearing and be mostly unable to pull itself back together.
With pride lingering in his bones at the result, he hears Liam’s call and glances over just in time to see the creature throw a large amount of mud at him. It goes wide, though, and Thorn is silently grateful for it even if he instinctually ducks as he watches it zip past him into the tree trunk with a wet smack. "Sssshit."
Following the pale jaguar’s paw-steps, the courtesan moves within range of hitting the second mudling with his air magic, using it yet again to whip around him before he launches it at the creature when he’s sure Caly’s out of the way.
Thorn moves into range of hitting mudling 2 and uses his air magic agaiiiiiin once Caly’s out of the way!

The sling whirls, the rock sails - and flies wide, missing the mudling that Noe had been aiming at by a wide enough margin to have the girl scowling. Upside? She didn't manage to hit any of her fellow fighters by accident. With a frown on her face and her heartbeat pounding in her ears, she laments her lack of practical battle experience. But she can't do anything about that now. It's something she'll have to fix later.
Skirting the battlefield, she watches as Liam takes down mudling 1 and the others turn their attention to mudling 2. Keeping one eye on the creature, she searches for and finds a new rock for her sling, slipping it into the weapon as she begins to twirl it once more. Once the others are out of the way and she's sure of her aim, she lets the new rock fly, aiming right between Memory Mudling 2's eyes.

Liam drives forward through the mire, Oakblade flashing pale against the dim light of the will-o-wisps. He plunges the weapon into what might generously be called the creature’s chest, burying it deep until the mudling shudders and caves inward around the blade. The light within it flickers once, then gutters out entirely. As the ooze collapses into a puddle, Liam yanks his sword free and steps aside, giving the others room to finish the job.
Calypso whirls toward the remaining mudling, water and earth spraying beneath her paws as she closes in. Her claws rake across its surface in a swift, slashing motion, cutting deep furrows through its mass that ooze and reform sluggishly. Hawthorn ’s magic follows in her wake, the air splitting with a sharp crack as his conjured wind slams into the creature. The blow tears off one of its arms, flinging the glob into the underbrush where it dissolves into harmless muck. Noe takes the opening; she looses her sling, and the stone zips through the rain to strike dead centre, but the pebble bounces off almost harmlessly.
The mudling reels, wobbling on half-formed limbs. It lunges for Calypso in a desperate swing, but its arm sloughs apart before the blow lands, splattering harmlessly at her feet. What remains of the creature shivers, its form beginning to sag under the rain as the glow within it starts to fade.Your randomly assigned posting order is Liam, Calypso, Hawthorn, Noe.

Oakblade flashed in the gloom, plunging deep into the chest (if one could call it that) of the mudling. The creature shuddered, caving in around the blade, melting into a puddle below as the soldier yanked his blade free. His lip curled at the sight of mud coating Oakblade's steel; he'd have to clean it well later.
But for now, only one mudling had been defeated, and Liam turned his attention to the second. He moved quickly across the clearing to Memory Mudling 2, aiming a slashing blow across its body in the hopes he could cleave it in two and end this. But, just in case, as his sword descended towards the murk, he sidestepped out of the way of the others, leaving the mudling open for further attacks.
---
Liam runs towards Memory Mudling 2 and uses his Oakblade to attempt a slashing strike to the mudling's "chest." Then he tries to move out of the way of the others to give them a chance to attack without hitting him.

Once more the attuned finds complete satisfaction in the way her claws tear through the mud. Sharp and carving, it helps more than expected to the lingering ache in her chest to lash out with this kind of violence. Not with smoke and mirrors, actual physical fighting.
When she connects, she drops back to leave room for everyone else to attack, her golden gaze focusing on the last remaining mudling as her muscles coil and bunch to try and dodge out of any retaliation. And when the creature does go to attack, she watches as the mud creature’s arm breaks halfway through the throw – splattering her pale fur with even more mud.
A feline snort leaves her as she decides to lunge toward it again once Liam’s had his attempt, her claws extended to try and carve through it once more, the ground and her fur slick with the rain and overabundance of mud, quick to withdraw once she’s made her attempt so she doesn’t get hit.
Caly swipes at it again with her claws in her tide jaguar shift!

Wind whips around him and lashes out when there’s an opening – cracking into the mudling’s body. He watches as the arm is cut off, flying away at a decent distance to slump harmlessly in a pool of mud with the constant clicking sound of mud hitting the puddle of it.
He watches as Noe uses her sling and the jaguar and other man take their turns, taking a moment to swipe a muddy wet hand against his forehead to try and keep the rain from getting into his eyes before he conjures more of the wind. “Think we’re almost there!” He calls out. Between the mud, the creatures, and the rain, everything seems a bit gloomy. And hey, if everyone makes it out okay he’s sure he’s got enough sandwiches to share with them as a thanks.
Waiting until there’s an opening, Thorn lashes out one more time with the wind to aim at the mudling’s bulk.
Thorn uses his wind magic agaaaain at mudling 2 when there's an opening!

One mudling down; one to go. And Noe has been utterly useless.
First she can't hit her target. Okay. Fine. She's not super well-practiced, so that's fair enough. But then she manages to hit the mudling, and nothing happens. And that just pisses her off. She supposes she should be glad the others are managing better than she, but she's really just angry that she can't seem to contribute worth a shit.
So this time, as the others attack, Noe runs - not away from the fight, which might be smarter, but towards it. And she waits for an opening, draws her daggers. And when she sees it, she strikes. It might not be the prettiest or most graceful attack, but she aims to hit and hit hard, trying to stick a dagger in each of the mudling's eyes. Then she's away, twirling out of the way of the other, clearly more practiced, individuals in the group.

Liam closes the distance in a spray of mud and rain, Oakblade gleaming like wet silver as he slashes across the mudling’s chest. The blade bites through with a heavy, sucking sound, carving a long trench that immediately begins to fill again with sluggish ooze. He twists free and steps aside, making room for the others as the creature shudders from the blow.
Calypso darts in next, water streaming from her pelt as her claws flash—but the mudling lurches just out of reach, her swipe catching only droplets and mist. Hawthorn raises his hand, calling the wind once more; it gathers with a low roar, but the gust splits prematurely, scattering rain instead of striking true.
Noe abandons her sling entirely, drawing her daggers as she rushes forward through the muck. She drives one blade into the creature’s side, but it slides through with little resistance, the wound closing almost as quickly as it’s made. The ooze ripples, shivering like something half-alive, before turning on her. A muddy arm lashes out, catching Noe across the ribs with a heavy, wet impact that knocks the breath from her lungs and leaves her streaked in gritty clay. The mudling looms unsteadily above her, its shape beginning to sag but its strike still carrying weight. Your randomly assigned posting order is Liam, Calypso, Hawthorn, Noe.
