Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.

Keeping her hand in his, Zavien tried his best to focus on things other than the struggles to come. He listened to her talk about her childhood, how Auden had gotten her a card and cupcake. Zavien hadn't received much more for his own birthdays. His mom would usually make him a special breakfast and give him whatever gift she'd managed to scrounge together, but once she'd passed, every year had passed without note. Birthday celebrations weren't for those being raised by the Silk Houses.
Still, it kind of bothered him that Flora always had such extravagant birthday parties, but never considered Soh might want to be celebrated like that. He studied her, squeezing her hand to draw her attention as he asked, "Do you want to celebrate it? With a party or a date or something?"

Zavien squeezed her hand, and she looked up from her now-empty milkshake glass, not having realized that her attention had drifted away from him and onto the subject of birthdays and celebrations and what she might or might not want. "I don't know about a party," she said, shaking her head. "But a date would be nice." She smiled, squeezing his hand in return, knowing that whatever they did, it would be special if it was something he had planned.
But that left her with the question of how he would want to be celebrated, when his birthday rolled around. If it was at the beginning of Flowerbirth, then it would be shortly after LongNight. Maybe he would want to celebrate their making it through unscathed, or maybe he'd prefer to keep things a little more low-key, have a chance to relax after the stress that was sure to be present. "What about you? What would you prefer for your birthday?"

Smiling at the simple request, Zavien winked at her. "A date I can do." He was already plotting a few ideas. From locations to activities to fun birthday desserts, if he was going to be the only person to celebrate it with her, he was determined to make it fun and memorable. The matter of a gift currently eluded him, but he would figure it out later.
As for what he wanted, Zavien hadn't ever thought about it. His face twisted, humming as he looked thoughtfully at their joined hands. "I don't know..." He shrugged his shoulders. "I think a trip would be fun. Just the two of us." It didn't have to be far or extravagant, but maybe an outing to a hot spring or a fun sailboat ride. Having never done anything big for his birthday, just having someone to enjoy it with would be enough.

Soh had no doubts about Zavien's ability to plan a date; thus far, their time together had been memorable and entirely pleasant. "Then I look forward to it," she said, squeezing his hand again. It would be the first time in a long time that she'd done anything to celebrate her birthday, and just the knowledge that such a thing was on the horizon was enough to make her look forward to it a bit more.
As for his birthday, his request was simple enough, and something that Soh could wholeheartedly get behind. "I think that could be arranged," she said, her smile radiant. "Just the two of us." She had a few ideas, but she could narrow them down as they got closer to the date. And figure out a gift, which would be far be the more difficult task.
With that out of the way and decided, Soh paused, unable to remember who had asked the last question, but unsure they were even still playing the game. "Well, lunch with you has definitely been a win in my book," she commented, referring back to their earlier debate about the best mealtime. "Was there anything else you wanted to do today? I know I was unexpected, so I don't want to derail any of your plans."

His smug smile returned, glad to know he'd won their little argument and succeeded in satisfying her surprisingly intense hunger. "Good. I'd hate to disappoint." It would have been embarrassing to talk so highly of this place only to have it flop, and he was apparently building a reputation for good dates.
Holding her hand a little tighter, Zavien sent another wink across the table. "You were the best surprise." His head shook, dismissing any concerns that he'd had plans to ruin. "No, I didn't have any plans. I got attacked coming back from a run." Chuckling, he looked down at his dusty clothes. "But I think a shower is in order if you want to keep me company." And whether she chose to hang out, join him, or find something else to occupy her in the meantime, Zavien was sure to find her later for dinner and a romantic stroll down the street.
