For the first time in her life, Selene had a job.
Of course, in her old world, she had spent her time doing much the same; stealing valuables and then trotting off to her local fence to sell them, and there had been the occasional weekend under her father's tutelage, poring over those dusty tomes full of numbers, but that had all been simply for the fun of it - there was no necessity; her privileged life as a countess was always there for her to fall back on.
Here, now, Selene had the choice of either working or... nothing. There was no other choice, apart from death, and that was not a goal that she was keen to achieve. So, early that morning, earlier than she'd ever woken before, Selene had made her way down to the docks, two large, heavy bags full of medicine strapped tightly around her waist - as she had no horse or servant to carry her goods - preparing to meet with a smuggler by the name of Saiden.
Compared to her first visit to the port, this was practically a leisurely stroll. On that first day, that utter disaster of a day, not only had she found herself stranded in an unfamiliar land, but the air had been so hot she had felt suffocated, and the crowd of people had swelled so that they resembled a raging sea, that seemed hellbent on swallowing her up and spitting her out as a bedraggled shell of a woman.
Today, in the cool morning air, the area was almost unrecognisable to her, peaceful, quiet, with only the slightest touch of salt drifting in on the breeze rather than that cacophony of smells that had assaulted her senses that first day, and, in the absence of the crowd, she could finally appreciate the quiet lapping of the waves as they crashed upon the shore. Not only was the area more to her preference, but her clothes were far better suited to her environment, with Selene having stored her leather armour in a trunk at Elias' house, and switched it out for less binding attire.
The disguise she was wearing was simple, a thick silk scarf wrapped about her head, covering up her hair and lower face, leaving only her eyes exposed. Her clothes were a little too plain for her tastes, a deep blue dress that matched the silk, with a conservative neckline and, compared to her usual cinched corsets, a rather loose waist. However, unremarkable was what she was going for; this time, she wasn't desiring attention from those around her, she simply wished to pass through unmolested, as nothing more than an unassuming, law-abiding woman, merely going about her business.
As expected, the dock was empty, so Selene allowed herself the luxury of wandering to the end of the wooden platform, slipping off her leather boots, and dipping her feet into the cool, sparkling water as she awaited the arrival of her associate. The sea had been a faraway dream of hers before, but here, it stretched out endlessly before her, a wondrous, enchanting vision.
