There’s quite a lot going on at once, from the boy’s harsh words to the girl’s pretty if bedraggled doll and Soleil’s own concern for the girl’s bare feet. “What if we just want to chop wood? Or we’re getting it for her daddy?” she asks stubbornly, trying to channel Paige’s bravery. Soleil has never really been treated cruelly before, so this is already far from what she’s used, mild as it is.
