Trinket finished her meal and tossed the leftover shell aside, the food already forgotten. She wiped her mouth on her dress, which already showed signs of a number of stains, partially hidden by the dark fabric.
"I don't have parents," she told Freya. "People ask me that a lot. Why would I need parents?"
She looked around, already feeling bored with her meal now behind her. There were always lots of interesting things to do at the docks, though. Perhaps, she thought, she and her new "friend" could find a way to make everyone's lives more interesting.
"Do you want to play another game?" she asked. "We should play a bigger game. One with lots of people."
Her dark eyes scanned the crowds along the docks. There were a lot of ships in port today. Lots of people coming and going, boarding ships, carrying cargo, and making last-minute purchases before their journeys. Surely they could come up with a game that would make things more interesting for each and every one of these people.
They would have the most memorable day of their lives.
