"Ooooh, could y'save some for me?" Tal called back hopefully to Remi as the local manticore expert examined the pile of feathers.
And then it all went to hail in a handbasket. Tal might have found the trail again, but before he could rub Sah's nose in it the maker of the trail came into view and Tal clapped a hand over his mouth to keep his yelp on the inside as he froze.
And he was suddenly very, very glad that he hadn't brought Boreal along.
Maybe if he'd been wearing his Goggles - and been willing to get close enough - he might have sensed something funny about the ethereal manticore in the distance, but he wasn't and he didn't. Instead he started backing away with glacial slowness, careful not to make any fast movements. And though he didn't exactly hide behind Remi, he moved back far enough that the manticore would have to get past the demigod first.
"Uh, Sah? What good's markin' th'trees gonna do if it just flies off t'hunt elsewhere?" he hissed at their leader, but since he didn't have any better ideas he pulled a hunk of charcoal out of his bag to start marking trees anyways.
